When I first heard this song, I thought it was a good song but it didn’t compare to their/her previous songs like Y and O. Over the course of the months though, the song grew on me and can’t believe how deaf I was to not notice how great the song actually is. The song has a simple production but the layering made it very lush with the subtle background vocals, etc. It’s not overpowering, which allows listeners to notice the little things that is happening throughout the song. I also love how it builds up and towards the end it goes back to where it starts, so it goes into full circle. The lyrics is also simple but poetic, it just goes along with their other cryptic songs.

Even though it’s not as ground breaking as their other singles like Clocks, Viva La Vida, Fix You, etc., this oriental inspired song is still a great track. The intro is possibly the best part of the song, with the strings serenading the listeners before the rest burst in. The layering of vocals during the chorus is very effective too, it gives that echoing effect and creating an atmospheric feeling.
Just like with Paradise, Hold it Against Me is certainly far from Britney’s greatest although it still has its own charm. During the time of its released, many actually didn’t like the chorus but I thought the chorus is great, it’s very melodic and a nice change from the “in your face” (for the lack of a better term) verses. However, just like the rest, the breakdown is definitely the best part and offered something new from the ever growing tired electro-dance-pop songs that crowd the airwaves. I also love how it slows down and builds up again before the hard hitting final chorus comes in to make its remarkable bow.
