Don't try to reason with them. They think pop culture and the music industry began in 2009.
The 80s were a different time. People still went Diamond regularly, there was a plethora of choices when it came to quality pop music.
Nowadays any hint of success and mild critical acceptance is met with a barrage of awards as the industry struggles to cling to any acts that show promise and could seem somewhat believable. Case in point: Macklemore, Gaga and her multiple nominations DISAPPEARING the second she starts flopping, Bruno Mars, The Black Eyed Peas getting an AOTY nom, etc.
Besides, Grammys are such an arbitrary way of measuring anything. They're decided by a small cabal of old people. Critics lists and longevity speak much more to enduring quality and popularity.
