How well can we ever truly know the ones we love the most? That's the question at the heart of David Fincher's new film Gone Girl, a thriller that boasts career-best turns from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike and an intricately weaved plot that'll leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
It grabs you in its vice-like grip from the opening seconds and doesn't let go. There are moments in this film that will make your jaw drop in shock and horror.
The jet-black humor is reminiscent of Fight Club, the tricksy plotting plays out like the director's under-appreciated The Game and the descent into moral darkness is similar to Zodiac. Fincher also tried to channel Alfred Hitchcock with 2002's Panic Room, but he makes a much better fist of it here, crafting a suspenseful mystery that's breathlessly compelling.
Pike, so often a decorative supporting player, delivers a career-defining performance here. She's a revelation, showing a complete command over Amy - with any luck Gone Girl should bag her an Oscar nomination come awards season.
Viewed as a slick Hollywood thriller Gone Girl comes out top of the class, but what makes it more than that is its ability to grasp at profound ideas on personal identity and relationships. Fincher does this by ripping a marriage inside out to examine how we define ourselves for the eyes of others.
The results are sensational. Gone Girl will rattle you to the core, get under your skin and leave you thinking about it for days. 5/5
For many of the television series covered by Metacritic, there will be one page, which lists all reviews published at the time the show first aired. (Typically, the critics will base these reviews on the pilot episode only, or perhaps the pilot plus one or two additional episodes, if these were made available to critics in advance.)
so metacritic for tv shows is totally inaccurate and useless
The girl singing in that backyard isn't much worse than the average Katy or Rihanna performance. Give her their teams, 6 months and she'll be better than them live.
