Quite simply the best thing Britney's recorded since Amnesia, or Quicksand. The direction Dr Luke and co should have taken the album in. Top 40 ready, but mature and age-appropriate. Britney's never sounded better on the verses/bridges/middle eights. She's also doing the low harmony on the chorus, haters. Genius. This song is genius. TEN.

I know! It's so weird. I thought "Inside Out" was going to be THE track on Femme Fatale—and then the album came out. But I still stand by its awesomeness.
That VMA performance was so beautifully exuberant that I was completely won over by this song. As an album track, it simply can't reach those same emotional highs. It's good, but not strong enough for the top ten—especially with the amount of incredible material on 4.
I'm actually shocked that "Hold It Against Me" is in the top ten, since it was so quickly forgotten after its release. Even hardcore Britney fans didn't seem to really latch on to it. I guess it's a grower? I certainly appreciate it more now that I'm so intimately acquainted with all its little sonic complexities. But I still prefer "Till the World Ends"...
Wow. For me, this is probably the biggest surprise of the whole ranking. I like the song, but I find it to be such a middle-of-the-road album cut. I would never pick it out as one of the very best songs on Born This Way (much less among all three discs)—and yet, here it is just missing out on a spot in the top five. Color me shocked.

The chorus is transcendent, but the rest of the song sounds like a cluster**** of synths having angry sex with each other. And the lyrics are complete and utter nonsense. I get why this is an enjoyable club track, but it is kind of musically bankrupt.

Time will prove them wrong. "The Edge of Glory" is genuinely gorgeous and inspiring. It's the only song among these fifty that is guaranteed to be part of those end-of-decade best-of lists in 2019—and that's the reason it's also the only 10 I gave.
