Seems like if he was really interested in the truth he would've waited to do this interview at a time when tensions were not so heated. I haven't seen his post interview after the grand jury's decision but his statement on record matched up exactly with what happened. The autopsy, the wounds, the shell casings all backed his story up.
I don't believe doing a post interview so close to the outcome was a bad idea, persay. That makes it seem like he wants to put this behind him as quickly as possible. I think if he would've waited any longer, then he would've been accused of "relighting a fire".
