Why would you not listen to people older than you who experienced things you didn't when you are talking about those very things?
You had to live in that time and experience it to know about it. And there's plenty of articles around where it's pretty evident how MTV had the power to create careers and make stars out of people and put artists on the map that were being ignored by other media including radio.
