In a recent interview she said Neon Lights isn't herself at all.
And now she's like she has this amazing song that didn't make the album last year but its actually the direction she wants to take. I'm pretty sure she wanted DEMI to sound different originally.

She contradicts herself a lot unfortunately. She must have been happy enough with DEMI to approve it though. Chachi even said that artists get the final say and we saw that to be true with Stars Dance. I remember reading that people from the label didn't like its outcome but Selena didn't want to change anything. Also, right before Replay was released, Zendaya was on a talk show talking about how HWR gave her full control over the music & the visuals (single cover, etc). I highly doubt that they'd give a new artist control & not an established artist like demi.
Regardless, I'm glad she realizes NL isn't her thing. She has too good of a voice for typical pop music. If she really wanted to go the pop route for this album, she should have focused on her live performances & had some choreography.
Now that she's writing some songs herself, I could see a major quality improvement next era & in future singles. I can only hope her & her team decide on one of the more raw tracks from DEMI to follow up NL.
