Chicago are You in the Mood for Burlesque ?
November 12th, 2010 9:07 pm CT
Well it looks like the 2010 Holiday Film Season's upon us and its my job to start the buzz, my cool cousin who's with the LA Times . Does weekend movie reviews and she Skped me into her computer so I could see Burlesque (2010) starring Cher and Christina Aguilera,Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell...Kristen Bell? That mousy chicks in everything. Burlesque is an upcoming American contemporary musical film directed and written by Steve Antin and starring Christina Aguilera and Cher. The film was confirmed to be released on November 24th 2010 in North America. It was announced that both Cher and Christina Aguilera would contribute to the Soundtrack album with Christina contributing to eight out of the 10 songs with Cher taking the remaining two. It was confirmed that the album would be released on November 22nd 2010. The lead track 'Express' was released to Radio on November 3rd 2010.
I usually tune out movies with too much music and too little dialog, Evita , LaCauge, Moulin Rouge, unless somebodys getting their ass kicked or Stalones or Schwarzenegger opening a M-16 into a crowded enemy scene , Or theres rude jokes are being banterd around, I loose interest. But surprisingly I liked this movie, the ladies involved made it good.
Anyway, Christina Aguilera makes her dramatic feature debut as Ali, a small-town singer who takes her shot at stardom performing at a neo-burlesque nightclub in Los Angeles. Situated in a regal old theater that's still dazzling despite having fallen into disrepair, The Burlesque Lounge is the kind of club where legends are born. When club owner Tess (Cher) hires charismatic Ali as a cocktail waitress, the ambitious big-city newcomer goes to great lengths to make a good impression. Taken under the wing of a friendly featured dancer (Julianne Hough), formerly of "Dancing with The Stars" Dereks sister. Ali quickly realizes that not everyone is quite as nice when she forms a friendship with bartender/aspiring musician Jack (Cam Gigandet) and incurs the wrath of the club's cattiest showgirl (Kristen Bell). After making her leap to the stage with a little help from a sympathetic stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and the club's playfully androgynous host (Alan *******), Ali becomes the star attraction at The Burlesque Lounge, and the crowds start packing in. Later, a wealthy businessman (Eric Dane) makes a bid for the club while trying to charm the talented young performer straight into his arms. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi .
Burlesque is a must see! I plan to see it on a big screen next time not on my PC.

V-O-S Reviews FILMS
V-O-S = Review of film "BURLESQUE" ( with CHER & CHRISTINA AGUILERA about working in a Burlesque club )
by V-O-S
Friday Nov 12, 2010
Review of film: "BURLESQUE"
It’s a TOUGH economy out there for "everyday" people. Things become especially hard when your small-town employer won’t even pay the salary he owes you. That situation causes Iowa waitress Ali Rose (CHRISTINA AGUILERA) to leave her job & head west to California...
... Christina doesn’t have much success in her "Golden-state" job-seeking. She chances to pass by a somewhat rundown place called the Burlesque Lounge & heads inside. There, she sees an impressive performance by owner Tess (CHER) who sings up a storm as she’s surrounded by a bunch of burly-Q dancers including Nikki (KRISTIN BELL), Georgia (JULIANNE HOUGH), Brittany (KATERINA MIKAILENKO), Marla (WENDY BENSON-LANDES) & Scarlett (TANEE McCALL)...
... Christina (being from the "prim & proper" Midwest) had never seen such a live performance, & wants to become PART of the show. But, having no real experience, Cher & her ex-husband co-owner partner Vince Scali (PETER GALLAGHER) don’t care to hire her. But, she talks to cute bartender Jack (CAM GIGANDET) & he helps get her a WAITRESS job there....
... As she "waits", Christina "watches" & learns the various lip-synched routines done by the dancers (including to Marilyn Monroe’s "Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend")... Outside of jealous Kristin, she’s liked by everyone at the lounge, including club manager Sean (STANLEY TUCCI) & Emcee Alexis (ALAN *******)...
... When her rented room is ransacked, she moves in with frustrated song-writer Cam who’s a good-hearted guy... The club is periodically visited by Marcus Gerber (ERIC DANE) who has a secret "agenda" in wanting to buy Cher’s Lounge. When one of the dancing girls is unable to perform, CHRISTINA convinces Cher to let her join the group...
... As fate (& the plot) would have it, she eventually gets a chance to really SING (rather than lip-sync), displays a powerful voice, & becomes a STAR at the club... Meanwhile, there are various sub-plots -- including growing closer with Cam and Eric, financial and relationship problems between various of the characters, etc...
... Will Christina be able to get what she really WANTS out of life?... Will Cher be able to avoid the ECONOMIC problems that are descending on the Club?... Will there be positive ROMANTIC conclusions for the various characters?...
... Elements of this film have certainly been seen BEFORE-- from Bob Fosse’s "All That Jazz", the movie "Chicago", "Nine", etc. But, what really counts is how SUCCESSFUL the "links" are, & this film really SUCCEEDS at what it attempts to do:
... There’s an stirring & enjoyable ENERGY to the whole production, with loads of impressively-staged singing & dancing routines. Some of the numbers may not stick in your mind as being particularly "hummable", but they’re designed to be utilized to "propel" the general Burlesque mood & tone & "plot" rather than be romantic "love" songs or the like...
... Thus, because of the fine casting & acting, plus the very effective & pleasurable dancing & singing, I’m rating this 8.5 or 10 stars...

BURLESQUE TEARS OFF A NEW STRIP AS IT GOES MAINSTREAM
Christina Aguilera in Burlesque
Sunday November 14,2010
Have your say(0)
FOR a woman who has spent her life strutting the stage in barely-there costumes bedecked with jewels, it’s fitting that Cher is returning to the big screen in a movie called Burlesque after a 10-year absence. The film, which opens on December 17, is a fans-and-feather-fuelled musical spectacular set in a burlesque club run by former dancer Tess, played by Cher.
Cher, who at 64 is still wearing miniscule costumes to sing her greatest hits in her on-going Las Vegas revue, felt right at home amid the rhinestone pasties and satin corsets worn by the club showgirls, including pop star Christina aguilera who is making her big screen debut.
Much like superstar Cher, who had Burlesque’s producer Clint Culpepper begging her to take the role, Christina, 30, also has a less-is-more attitude towards performance attire and after donning a burlesque-inspired get-up for Lady marmalade on the moulin rouge album, she couldn’t wait to get back into bawdy dressing.

Having two stars that fit so easily into the spangly bump and grind remit of his film was a blessing for director Steve antin, who describes it as “moulin rouge meets Cabaret”.
However, it is producer Culpepper who is the real fan of the genre, saying: “Ever since I saw my first burlesque show five years ago, I’ve wanted to make a film set in that provocative, artistic world.”
It’s a timely production as burlesque, which began here in the 17th century, has never been bigger than it is now. all across the UK, in pubs, clubs and anywhere with a stage, lauded performers with alliterative monikers such as Stella Starr and Lily Laudanum are stepping out of a huge clam as a sexy sea-siren or resting on the giant-sized hand of King Kong wearing only a bikini and fuschia boa. The addition of jokes and slapstick completes the package. SEARCH FILM for:
The burlesque revival here and in the US began about 10 years ago and, according to Ministry of Burlesque founder Kirsty Allan, aka Kittie Klaw, it just keeps growing.
“We get 25,000 hits a day on our website, ministryofburlesque.com,” says Manchester- based Kirsty who in 1998 turned her student hobby into a business that now helps to provide jobs, props, costumes and contacts for hundreds of burlesque performers.
“I’m sure this film will bring more attention to the genre but it is a wide one with many styles and I think Burlesque the movie will be a 21st-century pop culture take on striptease, which ironically was never part of burlesque over here.
“We’re just glad they have cast two actresses who have always had iconic looks and hairdos. Cher and Christina are both very representative of burlesque.”
A perusal of the website reveals that between now and Christmas burlesque goes into seasonal over-drive with shows happening every night; be it the High Tease in Nottingham with Dolores Delight and Dusty Limits, or Victorian Values in Manchester with Kittie Klaw.
On the forum there’s an urgent request for a performer in Ascot while members, mostly sparkly showgirls, discuss the best place to get a corset.
