 I think it's better to imagine what it would've been like if social media had been around back then, rather than if it had been released now. In 2015, an Erotica-type album wouldn't be controversial (unless someone as 'clean' as Taylor released it). The SEX book would flop harder than Kim Kardashian's new selfie book. Mostly, I think people would find it annoying. 
 
But if social media had been around back when Erotica was released, it would've made the era an even bigger, messier talking point. Would probably have prompted countless thought pieces and memes and vines and ****.
On a semi-related note... The past few months I've been thinking about the timeline of pop culture versus the timeline of Harry Potter, and let me tell you. Harry Potter seems ridiculous when you compare these timelines. 
Erotica (album) was released the same month that the Chamber of Secrets was opened. 
 
I can totally imagine Dumbledore walking around the halls of Hogwarts humming Erotica to himself (he is a gay, after all) instead of doing anything about it.
