I've never owned an Avril Lavigne album before, and after hearing "What The Hell" on the radio I got excited for her album. I went out on a limb and decided to buy it.
Frankly I've never been a fan of Avril, not to say that negatively. But I never got into her music really. "What The Hell" was a song that I heard and loved it, it had a catchy pop chorus, cool vocals and a rock vibe. The song is refreshing compared to all the electro-dance pop that is plaguing the charts recently.
That said, I don't really know what to classify Avril as. Is she punk? Is she pop? Is she rock?
But judging from the sound of "Goodbye Lullaby" alone, Avril is a pop-rock gal.
The album itself is NOT upbeat as I thought it would be, judging from "What The Hell". It's definitely an emotional album filled with plenty of ballads and mid-tempo songs.
My favorites are "Smile", "Push", "Remember When" "Everybody Hurts", and "Goodbye". "Smile" is the only other upbeat song on the album, and it's very catchy (seeing as it's produced by Max Martin & Shellback). The ballad "Goodbye" (written & produced solely by Avril) features Avril singing in a higher register, and it sounds beautiful. "Remember When" is another soaring ballad with beautiful vocals.
Avril's voice is very pretty to me, but sometimes she stretches it too far. Her voice can get on the verge of nasally, which is when I'm about to cringe. But 90% of the time she stays in a healthy, beautiful singing range.
I wouldn't recommend this CD to anyone who wants to rock out. This is an emotional, heartbroken album with a couple of upbeat songs thrown in for good measure. This CD gets boring sometimes, there is some unnecessary filler ("Remember When"). But Avril's talent does shine through on this album.
