It's more than just being a lead single. It was the FIRST song. It was the first taste of Katy anyone got of her and the image everyone had was "****ty Lesbian." We all heard her called that back when the song came out. It was genuinely the first time any of us (Millennials) heard a song like that played on our radio. I know I never heard anything like that before.
It had A LOT of controversy, and it definitely helped to normalize homosexuality (regardless how small), and the gay community has embraced it, despite controversy early on as to how it was homophobic. It IS played at almost every pride event & a staple to the community like Born This Way & that stupid Macklemore song.
