Yeah, that's kind of ridiculous. The reverb/mic effects made it pretty clear she wasn't lipping. Who puts reverb on a pre-recorded track? The sloppiness of the audio at points with the way the backing track layered with the vocal and the reverb echoes made that abundantly clear. A pre-recorded vocal would have been much cleaner throughout.
And people are kind of doing the most. There isn't a damned thing Mathew can do for her that she hasn't done for herself and better in this past year. She stumbled a bit during the 4 era but, she learned from those mistakes and she's improved upon a lot of things and grown tremendously as an artist. In a way that I feel might never have happened under Mathew's watch and influence. She's made some seriously ballsy and different moves that Mathew never would have cosigned.
I wasn't blown away by the performance -- her distance from the audience was awkward without any visible reason as to WHY she was 20 feet away from the people on a platform by herself for most of the performance. After realizing we were only getting half of the production explained that so I'm not blaming that on her. The energy was different because she's typically one to move around the stage and be close to the audience where she feeds the audience energy and feeds off of and that wasn't going on and not being able to see the point kind of made the performance feel off, but it wasn't bad. She did everything she was supposed to do; there were factors beyond her control that didn't fall into place. I just wish she'd improvised a little better when it didn't. Like instead of sitting back down when she was supposed to be under the water that wasn't falling, going out and getting closer to the audience, while doing some of her random freestyle dances from the video. She was probably upset and just going through the motions to get it done.
If this was anybody else, no one would be saying a thing because the expectations are sub-zero for everyone else with the exception of maybe one or two other female performers. She sounded great and other things beyond her control went badly; I think she could have recovered and salvaged better, but oh well. **** happens. It's not the end of the world. People are taking a one off to extremes unnecessarily.
