Ariana Grande to launch new series of TRL on CBS

LOS ANGELES: TRL is finally coming back. Just not to where you think it would be.

On Wednesday, it was announced that TRL is returning daily starting on January 5, 2015. However, it will not be on MTV. Instead, the producers are taking the show to the CBS broadcast network. This marks the first time TRL has been aired off of MTV since its beginning, and one of the few occurrences of cable network programming making the jump to over-the-air broadcasts. And in another surprising move, the show will not broadcast from New York, Los Angeles, or even Chicago or Miami.

“Viacom wanted to bring Total Request Live back to the airwaves, but doesn’t have the programming space for it on their channels,” stated Sumner Redstone, chairman and CEO of National Amusements, the parent company of CBS Corporation and Viacom (the owner of MTV). “MTV was really the only cable option, as TRL would not really fit into any other channel Viacom has. And because so many people, especially people under the age of 30, are cutting the cable cord these days and getting their content from over-the-air digital television and online streaming services, Viacom decided they wanted CBS to air the new version. CBS, upon being asked, immediately jumped on the opportunity. Both companies have been working on the new version together for months now, and you will soon see the result.”

You’re probably wondering where it could possibly broadcast from now. Well, wonder no more: it will be hosted in Indianapolis.

Yes, Indianapolis. In a surprising move, CBS chose Indianapolis to host its incarnation of Total Request Live. Rumors suggest that this almost made Viacom pull out of the deal, but they were convinced by CBS to stick with this plan. While questionable, it does make sense why they would choose Indianapolis as the location. It’s within a day’s drive of most of the US, it has lots of space due to how spread out the city is compared to larger cities, and it’s growing fast.
One thing is for sure: the new CBS affiliate has a lot to do with this. Tribune Broadcasting recently acquired the CBS affiliation rights for WTTV Channel 4, a station they own in Indianapolis that is now known as CBS 4 after switching from CW programming to CBS programming after a broadcast of the city’s new year celebration on Georgia Street (The former CBS affiliate, WISH-TV [owned by Media General], now carries CW programming. Tribune also owns Fox affiliate WXIN-59.). It has been revealed that the affiliation contract for WTTV includes a clause that allows CBS and Tribune to build a studio in downtown Indianapolis for TRL and to produce the show from Indianapolis.

The show’s studio will be located in the former Nordstrom department store in Circle Centre Mall downtown; the building already hosts the Indianapolis Star headquarters and also has new restaurants coming to it this year. The studio has its street entrance right on Georgia Street, which is where the studio’s windows will face and where fans will stand (it’s just a two-lane road with a large pedestrian median meant for special events- like TRL!). The studio will also be reachable through the mall.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard said this of the new production: “I am excited for Indianapolis to have a major network production. I expect things to just start snowballing from here on out.”
To help the show premiere in its new run, multiple stars were asked to host the first episode of the new one-hour show. At first, the plan was to get a major pop star from the show’s heyday (like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, etc.) but all had previous engagements. While they are still able to come host anytime they like, the new plan for the first episode was to get a currently-huge pop star. And what better currently-huge pop star to host TRL than the one who already did in a thirty-minute special airing on MTV? That’s right, CBS chose Ariana Grande to host the first episode of the new run of TRL!

Ariana sent out a tweet right after the announcement, saying, “I’m so excited to launch the NEW TRL on CBS! Make sure to tune in to your local CBS station at 7 pm EST/PST, 6 pm CST, or 8 pm MST!”

TRL will begin airing on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 7 pm EST/PST as a lead-in to the usual primetime programming. This translates to 6 pm CST and 8 pm MST. CBS 4 Indy has also done an interview with Ariana in preparation for this.

Ariana Grande interviewed on the new CBS4 Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS: Pop singer Ariana Grande stopped by the new CBS4 news on Thursday night and Friday morning to be interviewed about the upcoming revival of TRL on CBS as well as to perform her latest single “Heartbreak” live. CBS4 recently launched on local channel WTTV (which is simulcasted on WTTK since WTTV broadcasts too far south for some viewers) with veteran Indy talent in the evenings and Indy newcomers in the mornings. The evening interview is below, while the performance will be in another article.

Debby Knox: We have a very special guest today. She is the first host of the new version of Total Request Live we are co-producing with CBS. Welcome, Ariana Grande, to the new CBS4!

Ariana: Hello!

Bob Donaldson: Do you like it here so far?

Ariana: Where? The studio or the city?

Donaldson: Both, actually!

Ariana: Alright! The studio is very nice, although a little small. That’s not bad though, it’s cozy. I really like the TV wall for the weather!

Knox: Yeah, it turned out really nice. Our engineers did a good job on the whole production.

Ariana: The city… it’s much nicer than I expected it to be, honestly. Everyone makes fun of Indy because it’s not a New York or LA or Chicago or Miami. But it’s definitely a nice city and effort has definitely been put into it to bring it up to a higher level. I won’t be surprised if Indy is a major city within 50 years.

Donaldson: Yeah, we’re really proud of our city! Now let’s talk about TRL. How excited are you to be the first host of the new version?

Ariana: Extremely excited. It’s not every day you get to do something like this, and I rarely get out to cities like Indy because everything’s either in NYC or LA or maybe Chicago. It’s refreshing and a nice change of pace.

Knox: So, what has TRL been like so far? To my knowledge, you’ve been rehearsing for a few days?

Ariana: Yeah. The set there is very nice; I like how it emulates the old Times Square setup. Anyway, rehearsals have been going smoothly with the main host. I can’t reveal his or her name yet as I am supposed to introduce the person. But yeah, we’ve been working all week on TRL. We’ve compiled random top 10 lists so far, but we’re actually opening voting for Monday’s episode tomorrow. You’ll be able to vote via text, a form on the official website, or via Twitter.

Donaldson: That will be interesting! So, how about your single and album?

Ariana: My current single is “Heartbreak”. It’s about a girl who finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her with her friend who didn’t know about the relationship. The music video just came out after the ball drop in Times Square. It uses 48 frames per second, like The Hobbit, for the modern-day scenes that frame the 24 frames per second “60s-movie” main body of the video. It’s gotten a lot of hits on YouTube. Last I checked, it was on track to break the record for most views in the first 24 hours.

Knox: Wow.

Donaldson: Great!

Ariana: I know! My friend, Nicki Minaj, currently holds the record. I hope I beat the record though. She does too. Anyway, the album… It’s supposed to come out next week, but I think it might have to be delayed. There was a mixup in the factory and they just made CDs of my last album in my new album’s packaging. So that’s being sorted out. I’m leaning towards it being delayed at the moment. We haven’t even released the press release yet. It’s still up for preorder though, so go ahead and preorder it! If you preorder, you get “Heartbreak” as well as one other song immediately!
