Thematically ARTPOP has many themes Gaga has already dabbled on, but musically she's just branching out to rougher/more underground tones of eletro-pop music.

"ARTPOP" is the song that sounds the most different from everything she's done. Also, am I the only one sensing J-POP influence in "MANiCURE"?

I just don't know what she's doing with this era. She should've released this in 2011 instead of 'Born This Way'. "Applause" might've smashed then (Though it's still a bad song). I think the fact that she started planning/writing the era so soon after 'Born This Way' released was the first sign/note that this era might be a bit behind the times. She should've started it later and observed more of increasingly-popular trends and such.

Further, each new song sounds different than the last with this. I have a feeling the album might be rather inconsistent. What's she doing?
