About that, I've always wondered why other pop stars don't sell as much as Taylor when their fanfase are pretty much just as big (or even bigger). I'm not trying to downgrade other artists, I'm just wondering why are the sales lower? If every Rihanna fan would buy at least one copy, that would be at least 500k or something, right (first week)?
I don't get why fans would ilegally download their fave's album.
I really hope I won't sound rude, that's not what I want

I don't know tbh,but most pop girls have had controversies in their past which white soccer moms don't like so they would never buy those albums for their kids or themselves,Taylor is the typical white american girl, her break-up lyrics connect with basically every single person and her "clean" image has really helped her to reach the level of success where she's right now tbh.
The majority of the navy are poor 3rd worlders so they would rather buy a plate of food than buying their faves albums if i was in that situation i would do the same tbh

Sometimes I forget that those people exist
Who cares if you disagree with what Rihanna is doing her songs are so catchy and fun
Those parents want their kids to stay pure and innocent until they're 32, it's ridiculous.

Simply put, she has the perfect public image paired with sound to cash in on the demographic that has their music paid for.
Taylor Swift album is a more attractive purchase for the ever-so sensitive parents.
To avoid sounding bitter, I have 764+ plays for 1989.
i know that personally, i never bought "racy" music on itunes because my mom would question me about my purchases... now that i'm older i don't have to worry about that so much
this is why rih excels at streaming, you can simply listen to her bops without leaving a paper trail
She has a potty mouth, she's very outspoken, occasionally her image is hyper sexual.
I can deff see why some people are reluctant to buy her albums or products. Especially if you go by majority of the negative things that are written about her in the media.

It's sad though.
Maybe it's because I'm a very open minded person, but honestly none of the scandals bother me at all. (unless it's sexist, homophobic, racist, etc... and that's not Rihanna's case)
If Rihanna was a boy, no one would even bother giving her a bad image for the thing she has done. It's sexist IMO.

Ok let's talk US fanbase.
I'm bored anyway
It's not a question of fans illegally downloading an album (even tho' it takes a part in Rih's case since her fans in the US are mostly hoodrats ), it's just a question of demographics, they mostly don't have the same. Simple as that.
Taylor is extremely family friendly and appeals to a large crowd of white conservative people (a crowd that will most likely not download illegaly since they have a high standard of living), her image is very much safe. You combine this to her songwritting skills (means talent) and country roots (means american white folklore), you have a JUGGERNAUT.
I don't need to explain to you that when you listen to Birthday Cake or Man Down rih is quite the opposite of family friendly and she does not quite appeal to conservative people. In the US her demographics is mainly black people, any kind of young adults and teenagers from a VERY wide echelons of society .
Anyway to resume, just like Rih's long list of genres she's been trying throughout her career, her fans are a mirror of that = A MESS.

I'm sorry for not knowing enough about that situation
I never thought of it that way.
Also, Rih's performance skills/talent are always called into question. If she was consistent and always slaying in that regard, her album sales in the US would be a lot better. Anyways, a lot of what Scherzy said is true. There are a multitude of reasons Rih doesn't sell as well as her peers and most likely never will.
Another reason is Chris Brown the incident itself lost her a lot of fans and so did the reconciliation it's like she lost urban in 2009, lost everyone with the darkness of Rated R, gained a tiny bit of White America with LOUD, lost them with her "bad gal" image, and gained urban back when she got together with Chris
