But, at 36 years old (in a patriarchal and ageist industry at that), is now the time for the experimental albums? At this point we'll get her next project at what age 37/38? Almost 40. No shade, but the industry will not be pegging her the "it chick" at that point - especially if they aren't now.
It should be the other way around, mainstream, commercially consumable album now and experimental ish later.
That's what so frustrating about Nicole. She's a ready-made SOLO star waiting to happen, but she keeps blocking her own shine with backwards decisions.
Like, how can she work with Tricky and The Dream (who've made the biggest hits of this generation) and come out with THIS album. It's a travesty and I actually blame Nicole. For the most part, people will give you what you tell them and/or accept. And I have it on good word that she recorded the album first and then shopped it to the label, meaning she can't even say it was the label that forced her hand musically.
Nicole just joins a growing list of super-talented acts who have no ear for hits yet too much influence over their music, hence end up in the Pop wasteland trying to get out. It's sad.

Nicole already released a generic mainstream album, it's called Killer Love. The British public liked it but Americans hated the singles so much she didn't even bother releasing it in the USA. Right There and Don't Hold Your Breath were smash pop singles that were hits in Europe but somehow, not surprised, the USA snubs it. Honestly if you've watched a lot of Nicole interviews, she implies it in a lot of interviews, that Americans are not here for her at all no matter what Nicole releases.
At this point in her career, Nicole has nothing to lose doing something different. As for mysef, I stopped listening to mainstream music altogether, so much sh*t music on the Billboard Top 30 it's f*cking ridiculous these days.
I mean that song, what's it called, the one about bass? Is it called "all about that bass"? How is that the #1 song on Billboard, its awful. Same with that anaconda song. Pop music is horrible these days, its just sad.
