Well no, people aren't taking into account why "21" is so big and the kind of music it is. Music in the 80s was vastly different and one of the main reasons why Adele and her music is so massive is because it's all a breath of fresh air from all the crazy, over the top performers. For all we know, it would have flopped in the 80s.

They do. I remind you that last year, if it wasn't for Adele's success, the best-selling album of the year would have been Born This Way with 5.4M copies sold. In the 80s, a big release album selling that amount was a moderate success.

Yeah, but not every album released in the 80s went on to sell 20M+ copies. By your reckoning, The Fame would have sold 40M+, which just wouldn't have been the case. In the 80s, 21 would have sold around 25-26M right now.

I don't know exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure album music industry is down at least 50% from the 80s. 25M would have been in 2006, maybe.

What was the latest album to approach 20M copies? Norah Jones? Britney?
