It worked really well for _genic, so given that the singles market isn't what it was 8 years ago she should stick to this tactic. It's sad to see her nearing Kuu/Ayu levels of single sales though, but I guess it's the cost of trying to be an electro/dance act.

She's not an idol – Namie is going to eventually join Kuu and Ayu's levels within the next year or two, and that's fine.
Here's the thing. Kuu and Ayu have extremely dedicated fanbases. They have successful tours every single year and are doing more dates at smaller venues, resulting in more people getting to see them in more intimate settings.
You can tell the Kuu is especially really happy with this. She's beaming in all her photos, her music is great and Avex has been really strategic with her release dates - her albums still manage to get that #1 debut.
I've come to terms with the fact that Ayu is one of the most hated celebrities in Japan and that she'll never experience the success she once did. The fact of the matter is that she's still a legend, still produces fun music and live shows and I'm at peace with that. Plus her Instagram is so fabulous.
