I'm not so convinced that Marina would quit, however, if dropped by her label. This is a woman, after all, who had so much drive that she taught herself to play piano at the age of 20 without any previous musical training, who applied to be in boy bands because she wanted to be a musician so badly, who recorded her own EP with Garbage Band and sold the individually hand-made copies on MySpace.
Just two years ago, she said that she wasn't concerned about big commercial success and would just come out with an EP every year, rather than waiting to put out big albums. Well, okay, we know now that's not ultimately how she felt. But I think she could tap back into that spirit if need be.

These days, also, she says that her biggest inspiration is PJ Harvey, who has never been someone who aims for the top of the charts.

Yeah I do agree with you, she was so determined, scarily determined with a dose of delusion but it worked. It was just when she did that interview in Australia where she called herself a "failure" you could really feel the hurt she was experiencing. Things hadn't gone and she watched as her contemporaries (Ellie, Paloma, Eliza) had gone on to have some level of success and she was left behind.
In a way it was what she needed that realization that she couldn't just force things to happen for her. It may have worked before but she couldn't just come out with TFJ part 2 and expect it would be successful for her and instead she came back with this excellent era. As a fan she has totally delivered and (I believe) the sales will come eventually.
But I do believe that Marina's a bit more tainted and disillusioned this time around. I remember when she used to blog, sometimes it would be some random one line thought others an essay on something she had read or had been bothering her. And her tweets, she was constantly on twitter (apart from every few months when she would quit) and she was constantly tweeting fans. She seems more distant this time around, maybe she's just too busy or doesn't want to get in the way of her vision.
Before she didn't feel like a popstar, she seemed like someone you could easily be friends with, while as now she defiantly seems more popstar. Which is in the end a good thing for her career. These aren't criticisms because I'm loving all she is doing this era, these are just changes that I've noted since she labeled herself a failure.
