I hope it wasn't too traumatic! (I couldn't get out of bed for a week.)

I don't know, the fact that she reminds you so strongly of Kate Bush is why you're drawn to her? A lot of older Marina fans I've met are also fans of Kate. Same with Florence & the Machine.

I don't know if Marina reminds me so much of Kate in the sense that most people might take that to mean. There are other musicians who sound vocally and sonically more like Kate. Tori Amos on one end of the spectrum, for instance, and Danielle Dax on the other. Early Sarah McLachlan in the middle. There's a woman named Happy Rhodes who at times is indistinguishable from Kate. I like her, but never became smitten.
Musically, what drew me to Marina is that although I lived through New Wave, other than a few exceptions (Devo, The B-52s, and Lene Lovich), none of the New Wave bands really wowed me. Many of them were fine and fun, but few of them filled me with anticipation until I could listen to their music again.
And then, a quarter of a century after the fact, Marina came out with the most perfect New Wave album that never was. It was just amazing to me that anyone could so perfectly reproduce something that had been pretty much dead for a quarter of a century and while doing so, also do it better than it had ever been done before.
There are significant similarities between Kate and Marina, though. They both have very large vocal ranges and are not afraid to use them. Marina's voice sounds more like Lene Lovich's, but unlike Lene she packs it with emotion, like Kate does. Both Marina and Kate are very dramatic. They both love minor keys. They both write very dark songs, yet without falling into goth. They both have squirrely senses of humor. They both write lyrics that draw you in, grab you by the heart, and then won't let you go.
Florence is fine, and superficially sounds more like Kate at times, perhaps. But, at least for me, Florence's music doesn't have that same deep emotional resonance.
Excellent. You're my kind of non-robot!
