I've been so busy that I've stopped listening to the album for awhile. The scary part is that I'm not itching to back to it, though it could probably be a result of overplaying it. But I'm really worried about how well it'll do in the long run if it's already flopping on the UK charts.

When I saw her perform in Boston a year ago, it was at a small club, but the audience was utterly and completely rabid! I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen a lot of live music.
But I've seen this before with quirky British pop music that does well in other countries, but doesn't really translate to a mainstream American audience: I've been a huge fan of Kate Bush for quite a few years. She's been a huge star in England and elsewhere, but she's only ever had one Top 40 single here in the US, and her albums have never been in the Top 10. And if they even make it into the Top 40, they barely dent it.
On the other hand, when Kate came to NYC to sign autographs, the line went all the way around a city block. There's a chance Marina could get that kind of audience.

Kate refused to tour or do promo for nearly all of her career, I think that played the biggest role in her inability to become an international star, especially stateside.
I agree that Marina isn't likely to become a huge pop star with a mainstream following. She's too quirky for that level of stardom. To be honest, I think Marina is someone who'll leave the music industry quite early. I don't know why, but I get the strange feeling that she won't be here for long.

Personally, I don't think that that's going to happen. What else would she do? It's not like she's made it rich yet.
Maybe for fans, Marina making it rich is the worst thing that could happen us. Lily Allen says that she's retired. She has plenty of dough. Kate Bush made it rich and she retired when she was 35, but then she came back 12 years later and came out with another great album. And then a few years later released two new albums in the same year. Back then Kate was my Marina, so imagine how I felt with no new material from Kate for 12 years! Yet I managed to survive and there was more great stuff to come.
So even if Marina retires in 9 years, there's no reason not to look forward to more in the future. Also, since Marina isn't rich yet, she has to do something to make a living. Even if she isn't able to make big production pop records, I'm sure that she would be able to make a living making an acoustic or other low-budget album every year and touring a lot. I guess that's not an easy life, but it sure seems that Marina has plenty of material in her, given all the great stuff that's leaked. She could make two more great albums out of just that stuff.

Sure it would be just fabulous if Marina received the respect and success that she richly deserves, but time is often kinder to geniuses such as Marina than the present is.
I recall reading many really derogatory or dismissive reviews of Kate Bush back in the day. Her album "The Dreaming", which is the greatest album ever recorded or that ever will be recorded, was a complete and utter commercial flop. To this day, it's still only gone Silver in the UK. On the other hand, Kate is now regarded as a national treasure and considered to be one of the most influential female musicians ever.
I'm just mad that Kate hasn't been knighted yet. But, as I've been saying, patience is sometimes well-rewarded in these matters. I'm sure that the same thing will be true for Marina.

Don't panic, that's just merely my opinion, it's not as though she actually said anything to that effect.

I don't want to think about Marina retiring after Electra Heart sort of flopped though, I'm trying to imagine being in her shoes, with all the goals she has, and wanting to give up but I love her so much, she has to keep going for us!

Alas, much closer to Kate's age than to Marina's. I've vowed to be immature forever, though.

Cool, it's nice to have more adults posting around here! Makes this place a little more diverse (and makes us 20-somethings feel less old).

It kind of amuses me to hear someone 20 years younger than me saying that they feel too old, but then again, I felt that I was too old when I turned 12, and when I turned 18, I was really depressed that it was going to be all downhill from then on. Especially since time was rapidly running out for me to win a Nobel Prize before I died.
Can you tell why I'm drawn to Marina's music!
As it turns out, it's not quite as bad as I thought it would be to be over 30. And then over 40.
Not that it's great, mind you.

P.S. On the other hand, they did come up with Spotify, which makes my life oh so much easier. I sure wish they had that when I was 18!

I went through a similar thing last year when I turned 20.
I don't know, the fact that she reminds you so strongly of Kate Bush is why you're drawn to her? A lot of older Marina fans I've met are also fans of Kate. Same with Florence & the Machine.
BTW, I love Kate too.
