Plus he was on the Airplanes remix which could have served as hype.
Not Afraid was/is a big digital hit. It sold 380K first week, debuted at #1 on the Hot 100, & is still top ten on iTunes to this day. I doubt the Airplanes remix did much.
Plus LTWYL went to #1 on iTunes when Recovery was released. During that time, it was also making huge gains on radio (which it still is today).
Yeah, but Not Afraid has gotten alot of airplay since it went number one, before the album was released.

Yesssss, like I said earlier I think its possible under the right circumstances. If an artist has a hot enough album and enough hype then i'm sure it will happen sometimes in the future again.
Taylor fits that description more than anyone right now too IMO. Coming off 2 massive albums and already getting buzz from billboard itself. She's on the right track, it's up to the quality and reception of the first single now.

I agree that a million is still somewhat possible for the right artist and circumstances, but album sales from 2007-2009 are down 25% (500m to 373m), and we are at 154 million+ in 2010, currently.
