For me, the perfect example to what Viola was talking about is American Horror Story. You have the PHENOMENAL actress Angela Bassett in your cast, yet you give her the most RIDICULOUS and useless character ever, and crown the average and amateur Lady Gaga as your 'leading' lady, which leads her to an undeserving Golden Globe nomination and win.
With Jessica Lange absent from this season, Ryan could have made Angela one of the leading ladies, seeing how amazing she is. She was truly breathtaking as Marie Laveau in Coven. Yet, he gave her a pointless role in which she couldn't show off her acting abilities and talent.

That's what's wrong.

Obviously it's a long-term issue that's been going on for decades, and like most issues similar to this they get swept under the rug until an incident brings it out again. In this case it's the Oscars and their lack of diverse winners. Viola's statement is something probably a lot of people have said in the past, but some things need to be repeated for others to get the memo. These wanna be activists who are boycotting the awards aren't gonna change anything. It's just nice to hear someone big like Viola still gets the big picture of the problem.

I don't really get who you're trying to drag here. Most of the people in here have no direct influence on the situation. I'm sure most educated people in here including myself know this is a chronic issue. If I wanna agree with Viola and support her for not being on the "let's boycott the Oscars!" bandwagon then I will.

I find it awfully ironic how you say that Black people whine too much, yet you've been whining and bitching every time you make a comment. First, do you even live in the US to comment on American society. If you have no idea about the US's history or the contributing factors that make people fight for more equality ("whin"e) in the first place, then just hush. And how dare you criticize the people asking for fairness instead of criticizing the system or the people that make the world an unfair place?

If you feel Asians and Hispanics have less opportunities in the film industry, then attack the powers that be for making it so, but don't attack another minority that you feel might be more represented or visible. The issue is that Jordan wasn't nominated by bfca, or sag, or bafta, or globes, so his path to a nom was nigh impossible (the exceptions this century being Eastwood for his BP winner and Cooper for his #1 film of 2014).
Elba was probably not nominated b/c voters didn't want to watch a Netflix film.

No. That was about money, not race.

On what planet would the producers pick Angela Basset to lead AHS over Lady Gaga given the option? They need ratings to succeed, and they knew Gaga would give them more press/ratings/hype/fans than Angela.

Angela's role was crap, but I'd blame that on Ryan casting too many actors to allow for significant character development and focusing too much on his latest toy (Gaga) to play with the old ones.

No, they shouldn't have. The only one worthy was Idris (and Beasts) but they were never going to nominate a Netflix film.

Maybe Coogler deserved a Director nom, but even the front-runner Ridley Scott got snubbed along with Spielberg and others B-list (this award season) directors

Hmm, Birth of a Nation is getting great reviews from Sundance and it's the kind of film that Oscars tend to like.

However, I think some people will be kinda pissy if it's the year's ONLY big Oscar play for a movie with people of color. Cuz the subject matter/nominated roles would still be looking back about two centuries: slaves.

So hopefully Loving or A United Kingdom can pull through, as interracial marriage is a more modern topic that doesn't directly center so much around oppression and suffering.
