Let's get Adele to cover a Whitney song, since she's on her level vocally. Should be easy enough. Imagine her singing IWALY. Like really people? .
That's not to say that she isn't comparable as an artist, but Whitney is essentially the female Freddie Mercury in terms of vocal ability and technique.
Whitney put out better and more classic music she took risks unlike Adele her peak was bigger and vocally let's not even go there this is disrespectful to not only Whitney but to other soulful artist not fair.
Whitney is undoubtedly the best female vocalist the industry has ever witnessed, but she wasn't a part of creating any of the songs she sang. Literally, none. It's not like she really even had the opportunity to take risks because she was never even made the music in the first place.
BTW DejaVu, I'm agreeing with you, I just quoted the wrong person lmao
Maybe in terms of sales... That would be about it.... Or if you want to make a vocal point, I would say they both have/had one of the most beautiful voices of their time. Overall, Whitney (in her prime) absolutely demolishes Adele vocally. Adele is a highly overrated vocalist. Love her, though.
In terms of overall talent and artistry, Adele does have Whitney beat. They're completely different artists, I don't think it's appropriate to either artist to say Adele is the new Whitney... They're completely different.

Whitney is NOT the best female vocalist of all time

And I with you! Whitney is a masterclass vocalist, arguably better than all 3 of my faves.
But Whitney "taking risk" is a laugh and a half when most of her songs were bought/handed to her by Clive.
All this "risk" talk....I hope y'all know that it wasn't the norm for a singer like Whitney to come out with the kind of music she came out with. She came out in a musical climate that was rock-heavy and club music heavy. No one was really singing the kind of music she was with that kind of vocal.

Houston's triumph is all the more impressive for the odds it bucked. Two years ago, she was an unknown, a background vocalist in a cheerleader's body. Moreover, of her first album's ten cuts, six were balladsOf her first album's ten cuts, six were ballads. This chanteuse had to fight for air play with hard rockers. The young lady had to stand uncowed in the locker room of macho rock. The soul strutter had to seduce a music audience that anointed few black artists with superstardom. [...] She was a phenomenon waiting to happen, a canny tapping of the listener's yen for a return to the musical middle. And because every new star creates her own genre, her success has helped other blacks, other women, other smooth singers find an avid reception in the pop marketplace. Time Magazine, 1987
Stop rewriting history. Taking risks is more than being an established artist jumping from weird sound to weird sound.
I think Whitney is one of the best, but I don't see a problem with saying Adele is one too. Both of them share one aspect - their voices carry a lot of emotion, which makes it accessible to tons of people. Whitney's might be better technically, but that doesn't take away the brilliant aspects of Adele.
If she doesn't have the impact of Michael J, Whitney, Mariah, she will be forgotten. You really have to have legendary status to have people dock you as a substantial moment in history.. regardless of your selling digits, at least GP wise. That is the biggest difference between Adele and Whitney. Whitney gained legendary status without depending on sales to do it for her. The era when talent was an actual dependable factor in gaining success. This will eventually die off like the Taylor hype.
Adele won't be forgotten. She went on a 3 year hiatus and 21 never stopped charting in the US. Her catalog sales and streams were always flawless and her songs are always covered on talent shows. She is on the doorstep of legendary status, and with all the records that she's breaking that most likely no one will break again, she'll be definitely at the other side of the door. She IS a substantial moment in history, she's regarded as one of the greats of our generation and she is a full fledged phenomenon all over the world. And the Taylor hype didn't die off, the album sold a lot, her latest single went Top 5 and she's still touring stadiums with her world tour, so with that being said, Adele's hype won't die either
I think the comparison is fair to people (who tend to be younger) who think of Whitney as an incredible talent who was both a vocal powerhouse and commercial success in her peak. Adele is both of those things.
But for those of us who grew up in the 90s and saw more of peak Whitney--or who have watched hundreds of her live performances on YouTube now like I have --the comparison clearly doesn't stand up. There simply has never been another artist that equals Whitney is raw talent. She's incredible and incomparable. Might someone one day equal her talent? Maybe. But it hasn't happened yet.
