The BBC operates under a Royal Charter. The current Charter came into effect on 1 January 2007 and runs until 31 December 2016. Each successive Royal Charter is reviewed before a new one is granted, i.e. every 10 years.

The 2007 Charter specifies that the mission of the Corporation is to "inform, educate and entertain". But why such desperation and obsession... They don't play commercials and do not have to worry about profits. They rely on the citizens' money.

Every entity tries to protect itself. If their product/service is awful, obsolete,... or not used anymore, their existence is questioned.

Why would we pay tax for radio stations nobody is using? Thus they have to prove that public radio stations attract just as much listeners as commercial radio stations.

It doesn't matter to the bosses what they are supposed to do. Job and position (wanting to stay boss with x amount of workers under them) protection matters.

But most private hit music stations don't have such an issue. CAPITAL, Radio1's main competitor, is playing Living for Love and supports Robbie Williams, Take That etc..

And that refers back to one of my previous posts starting with "Typically public servant's..." and drawing arbitrary lines instead of check what their audience likes/wants.

People working in public sector has a different world view from those in private sector.

I haven't heard of another radio station with a tween audience doing the same thing.

I love it when they are FORCED to play songs they refuse to add on Sundays when they present the Official UK Charts.

When Take That and Robbie hit no1 and they had to play their songs they looked SO STUPID!

"This is the country's No1 song", but we are not playing it because they are too old. Ridiculous and laughable!

Not playing top hits makes THEM irrelevant. Not the artists.

What's their argument? We are not playing it because it was older people who bought the song and made it a no1 smash? Lol.

This sucks but the BBC is publically funded and has targets/remits it must adhere to. Radio1 is all tween crap now, anyway. Airplay on Radio2 will help sell the album, like it did with Kylie ha Abbey Road Sessions.

Sometimes they act like CRAZY PERSONS!

They never played MOVES LIKE JAGGER even though it was selling like crazy in the UK!

And they never played Hips Don't Lie by Shakira back in 2006 even though it was at no1 for weeks! That wasn't age related though... For some reason they hated the song! Their argument was that "it is in latin and no one will like it in the UK". The song stayed at no1 for like 6 weeks?!

They play things that are hot right now. For example Sia, who is 40 or something, but they still play her and she is on A List, because almost every teenager enjoys Sia's music and they can relate to it. They probably don't think that Madonna is hot enough anymore, so they banned her.
