THINGS THAT MAKE ME GO HMMM: GRAMMY SEASON EDITION
What's on Our Editor in Chief's Mind Right About Now
As we wait to see how Grammy whisperer Paul Grein's nomination picks did against the voters and committees, here are some things—some Grammy-related and some not—that make me wonder.
1. Frozen, Frozen, Frozen: Is the year's biggest-selling album (other than Taylor Swift’s 1989) and culturally defining worldwide phenomenon going to be Frozen out of the Album of the Year category? Lots of records are deserving; I just think this is too.
2. Meghan Trainor: She’s bigger than you think, with two songs selling bigtime on iTunes and “All About That Bass” a shoo-in for a Record and/or Song of the Year Grammy nod. Will she take Manager Troy Carter back to the top of the mountain?
4. Hozier is going to become huge going into Grammy season. Will Sussman and Ehrlich find a way to give him a fittingly substantial awards-show look this time, even though he won’t get his full nominations due until the following year (because his album missed the deadline)?
I'm trying to think of a solid AOTY category but can't.
BEYONCE and ITLH (maybe Ultraviolence & MMLP2 for success and hype reasons) are the only albums worth nods. It seems like the 2013-14 submission period was so bland. None of the pop girls (including Lana) truly delivered. Rihanna was away and it just seems lacking/empty.
I hope Beyonce wins. If she doesn't I think it'd be 20/20 backlash 1000x
Some of you having your meltdowns early I see , I'm just gonna wait till Friday so all the Ariana haters can realize that quality > quanity, then after I'll watch the queen herself perform at the Grammy Christmas/Nomimatioms Special and vocally deliver to the gods.
Edit: I love how no one raises a eyebrow when Sia's album is even a nomination when it's sold less to this date then what my everything debuted with. Again quality > quanity
