Beyonce's music would have been experimental in 2007, sis. And everyone has been focused on selling their album since the invention of the format. Do you really think anyone wants to sell $1.29 singles as compared to $12.99 albums? Beyonce is not the first to surprise release an album and she's also not the first to pay dust to her singles. I like the girl, but innovation is not her strong point. She excels in beauty, talent, performing, etc. but innovation is just the one thing that eludes her.

Oh so Lolita isn't something new at all? Well then...

Who is the most innovative star of today then? Katy Perry?

And I've always found this sort of sentiment silly. It's the same as people saying "ALL female pop stars owe sexual imagery or lyrics in music to MADONNA, she did it first!!" well of course she did, she's older than them and was one of the first major female stars to come to prominence after a generation of women grew up during the sexual revolution. You can't blame the new girls for being born later
You can compare stars relative to their respective eras of music. Otherwise you could just argue that the Beatles shouldn't even be brought up when Beethoven and Mozart or whoever existed.
Anyways, realistically I would give this to any of the major artists of the 60s, as today's artists are probably still most closely following their formulas. But considering ATRL mostly focuses on the 1980s-present, it's fair enough to focus on artists from last ~30 years in this thread.

I wasn't blaming you, I just get annoyed by the pseudo-intellectualism of the Internet, most of which comes from Tumblr.
I agree that artists benefit from the time they release, but we can clearly see that someone like The Beatles experimented a lot more than, say, Justin Timberlake, which is a lot of why they were able to be more innovative than him along with their time period.
As for Beethoven and Mozart, pop music is generally considered the antithesis of classical music. I think you're talking in terms of "popular music" which is actually not the same thing as pop music. Pop music is a genre created in the 1950s that evolved from rock'n'roll and traditional pop, which lasted from the mid 1910s (WW1) to the early 1950s. I think it's about time ATRL had a topic and dug a little deeper than the 1980s artists we always bank on.

Bjork.
Most contemporary pop stars incorporate elements that have already been used.

The thread title is a bit of an oxymoron and true innovation in a creative manner is completely lost on most of you.
'Tis all.

First of all, did you really not know what Lolita was? Sis
And no, sexual fantasies about younger/innocent people were never something new. They've been around thousands of years just judging from Greek literature. Britney is famous for bridging that into pop music, which took a surprisingly long time. I'm still shocked Debbie Gibson/Tiffany/etc. didn't beat her to it.
And I don't think any of the stars today are that innovative. Gaga's homages were rather novel at the time and I commend Britney for taking a stab at dubstep after it spent 12 years trying to reach the mainstream, but none of it will ever compare to the early days of the pop music revolution. Clearly I like what our faves are doing better, but the only recent HUMONGOUS innovation I can think of is auto-tune, AKA the Cher-effect. Mariah's popularization of melisma is also up there.

lol, some of these replies. ATRL continues to showcase their ******, laughable music taste and their inability to discover real musicians outside of stupid, manufactured pop stars.
Any way, I applaud those who mentioned Kate Bush.

Aren't hipsters supposed to know how to read?

Justin on the other hand.

I know that Brit doesn't have too much creative control but her music is innovative, its hard to tell when an artist is truly in full control of their music so the only way to judge how "innovative" they are is through their music and Britney has one of the most diverse pop discographies ever.

Chuck Berry and Bill Haley are the only artists to contend with Elvis in the musical department.

I agree, Elvis was a pioneer. Our faves wouldn't be the same without him, he paved the way for so many other genres.

MJ and Madonna will always be the answer. Any other answers are riddled with delusion.
I wouldn't consider them to be pop stars, but Elvis and the Beatles would also be an acceptable answer.
