We Ride had no big promotion. Break It Off had no M/V so it did pretty well all things considered. HTILY is Rihanna's 4th longest charting single on the BBH100 so I wouldn't necessarily call it a flop. Hard charted in many countries WW even though it was officially only a US single.

The thing with Rihanna is that every time she declines, she always has this huge single straight afterwards. Rihanna hasn't really declined since 2011/2012. Even though she took a break last year, she still got another #1 and a top 5 hit which is pretty impressive.

Katy is declining ever so slighty. Her singles/albums/tour sales prove my point.

Kelly's got one of the best, if not the best voice in Pop music right now. She's shown that she can sing pretty much every genre. That's what sets her apart and keeps her from being basic.

And her music....Breakaway and My December are FAR from basic. All I Ever Wanted was a lot more commercial and safe, sure, but there are plenty of songs on there that aren't basic... take a listen to songs like All I Ever Wanted, Whyyawannabringmedown, Can We Go Back, Tip of My Tongue....all of those were her trying new things, and I don't know of any other Pop stars releasing songs like Whyyawannabringmedown.

Stronger has songs like Honestly, You Love Me, and Why Don't You Try that are again, all new things for her (and I'm just naming a few). Even her Greatest Hits album had something completely different with "Don't Rush", that's even different from anything else on Country radio.

Also, take a listen to Wrapped In Red. There's jazz, broadway, blues, country, piano ballads, etc.


Kelly loves to try new things and has been doing it more and more over the years.....her label has held her back from it for a long time, and she's spoken out about it, but they seem to be gradually giving her more freedom to spread her wings.

Did everyone suddenly forget about Katy's countless sexual appearances, exposing her body (good for her), songs like IKAG, Ur So Gay, Peacock, E.T., Love Me, Legendary Lovers, or even performances like the recent one from the Grammys?

Katy being liked by a huge variety of people =/= her being basic.

I was thinking this the other day, only slightly different.

Tbh some of the music that Katy makes and releases as singles, specifically, is basic / generic. What I don't understand is why everyone always associates genericness with being bad. I personally don't let labels affect my taste; if I like a song I like it, I won't consciously choose to dislike it just because it's "generic". You can get generic music that's great (like some of Katy's music) and you can get non-generic music that sucks. It goes both ways, it's a continuum. Being generic doesn't always mean bad, imo.
