Rihanna's major chart success is in radio play. That's not nearly enough to make up for Britney's sales.
Rihanna's not even half as known as Britney is, lbr. Other than the Chris Brown incident, she's never had a really big moment in pop culture.
Rihanna has very, very little impact. She's been made fun of her whole career for having a weak sales-to-airplay ratio, weak album sales and her lack of impact. You're literally praising her for everything she's really, really bad at.
When TCSBS is weighted to 2014's inflation, it's actually $3M above the DWT's total gross. Granted it had one more show, but since Rih was averaging $1,459,565.13 per show, it's safe to say she wouldn't have outgrossed TCSBS even if she had the same number of dates. So actually, Britney's tour is bigger than Rih's
How?
Let's look at their TEAs in the U.S. to get an idea of how they would compare if digital single sales were album sales:
Rihanna
Albums Sold - 10,200,000 albums sold
Single Sales - 80,000,000 digital tracks sold - 8,000,000 albums sold
Total: 18,200,000 albums sold
Britney Spears
Albums Sold - 36,145,000 (32,747,000 Nielsen Soundscan) albums sold
Single Sales - 40,000,000 digital tracks sold - 4,000,000 albums sold
Total: 40,145,000 albums sold
Rihanna's career is huge, but she is clearly not competition for Britney. Britney's a bigger seller WW, so it's safe to assume that even if Rihanna was able to pull the exact same level of success for her next 7 albums (which seems very, very unlikely), she'd only just be getting close to Britney's current status.

Britney obviously. I love Rihanna, I mean I went to the DWT, but she's always been known as a singles artist and isn't really strong in any other department. She hasn't made a huge impact on the music industry, she has no iconic performances or music videos.

the delusional people in this thread. Hilarious!
Rihanna has the bigger career, hands down. There is no competition at all.
And absolute death at ANYONE putting Britney in the same category as real legends like MJ, Madonna, Mariah, etc. Britney is nothing more than a solo female version of the Backstreet Boys or Nsync, sure they may have been really popular at one point in time but does that really mean anything in the grand scheme of things? Britney has not been super successful in over 10 years and even then she's only ever had 1 smash hit: Hit Me Baby One More Time. She really has no impact on the music industry nor did she popularized "bubblegum pop" since plenty of artists had done it before her. She may have been the most talked about "artist" during her peak and in 2007 but that doesn't prove how successful she is. Just look at Justin Bieber, he was all over the news last year and his album was a flop. Britney is an icon of the early 2000s, nothing more nothing less.
Rihanna on the other hand proved she could remain relevant while maintaining commercial success. She has many smash hits and successful albums. Rihanna is the perfect popstar and unlike Britney, she isn't seen as a joke.

It took Britney one single to become an icon. She's a legend now.
Rihanna has three good videos: We Found Love, Where Have You Been and Only Girl. Britney has BOMT, OIDIA, Toxic, YDMC, Stronger, IAS4U, Boys, MATM, Everytime, etc. Rihanna does not have a strong videography at all and Britney is undeniably the best of her generation and rivaled only by Madonna (who handily surpasses her).
In terms of commercial success WW, Rihanna is behind (off the top of my head, in no particular order): Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Beyonce Knowles (and yes, DC receipts count), Shakira, Madonna, Alicia Keys, etc. Rihanna isn't even top ten WW, let alone #2
If we take out Britney's first three years, she's still miles above Rihanna Quit being biased and just admit Britney is bigger.

This is actually very well put. Of course Rihanna is nowhere near Britney's success or impact. If both retired today Britney would still be a household name, Rihanna not so much. With that said, Rihanna is only 26; she's in her prime. She still has time for iconic performance, great videos and other things. But as of April 14, 2014, Britney is the far bigger star, I agree.

Honey calm down. Britney is a legend, she even performed and collaborated with both legends, Madonna and Michael Jackson. Pretty sure those bands lasted 5 years while Britney has had a 15+ year career span. In the last 15 years she's managed to become one of the all time top selling female artists in the USA, you're telling me that means nothing? Britney has countless hits that will be memorable for many years to come: BOMT, OIDIA, Toxic, Everytime, MATM, GM, POM, Womanizer, I mean the list goes on.

Not when you stan for an hideous, washed up fallen star who is resorting to the shock value of bile and vomit projected on her for that extra 15 minutes of fame you won't. How about you buy the Top 1000 smash D.I.E instead of worrying about artists who have had far more longevity and success than Lady Cutga? It's cute that you're hiding behind Rihanna to drag Britney though.

This is why I give you girls paragraphs; so we never get uninformed posts like this. Let me put some receipts side-by-side for you:
- Britney Spears has sold 85 million albums WW and 175M records total. If we use TEAs to convert her single sales to album sales (ignoring her physical singles and counting them as digital tracks, undercutting their value), she's at 94M albums WW (90M singles/10=9M albums).
- Rihanna has sold 30 milion albums WW and 180M records. If we use TEAs to convert her single sales to album sales (150M tracks/10=15M albums), she's at 45M albums WW.
- BSB and N'SYNC stopped seeing success in the early 2000s. Britney Spears debuted at #1 in 2011 with a single AND an album and her 2012 collaboration "Scream & Shout" was a huge global smash.
- Britney Spears has more #1 WW solo hits according to MediaTraffic. They have a similar number of huge hits, though Rihanna does have stronger radio play.
- Britney's impact lies in the Lolita image from ...BOMT (influenced the debuts of Alize, Girls' Generation, T-ARA, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, etc.), her good-girl-gone-bad transition (something Rihanna has also used), the sound and video for "Toxic," HIAM's dubstep (the first hit to EVER have any dubstep, pioneering the way for a wave of dubstep that ruled from '11-'13), etc. The girl in your avi even cites Britney as a major influences and uses two outfits from "Toxic" in two separate music videos (the blue bathing suit in "Poker Face" and the crystals on her skin in "LoveGame" are both from "Toxic)." Her debut era and most iconic performance ("Paparazzi" at the 2008 VMAs) were dedicated to the decay of the blonde pop star, i.e. Britney.
- Justin Bieber never had any of the cultural impact that Britney did. They're not even close to the same level. Britney was (and still is) the most searched person on the Internet of all-time and ruled Yahoo's most-searched list for a decade straight.

Very true And thank you. Nobody says Rihanna is close to over yet, the Army is just annoyed because a newer, less established artist's stanbase is trying to drag her career and achievements to make their fave look better (and I'm not just blaming the Navy, as we can see from that Monster's delusional post).

Dead at Britney winnig
I never hear her on the radio never see her videos and never see
Her CDs in too charts whoops
Britney has been around longer but you have to remember rihanna is way more >>>>
I mean Britney releases a song yes! But I never heard work bitch. Bc her career isn't there with her anymore
As for rihanna even if it's an underrated song everyone will be all on that because she's rihanna!
Reason Britney is in here bc all the stans are on this site? Reason for that bc TRL did support Britney back in the days and atrl is the only place that still worships her but in real world she's not that famous anymore only for her old stuff. Which is toxic or womanizer.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense it's really hard on my iPhone.
Not trolling I Stan for blackout.

Yes, Gaga is flopping this era. I'm pretty sure everyone is aware of that.
This thread is about Rihanna though, don't see how I'm "hiding" behind her. I love Rihanna and I always drag Britney so...

So true.
One thing though, has Rihanna really sold that many records? Britney has sold over 185M and that's without mastertones

People call him queen Avril a flop.
Well Britney is the same fame as her.
Ignore the sales. They are competely different style of music.
Oh wait HTNGU slayed.
Britney slayed #1 songs once ago and so did queen A.
Point it Rihanna should be voted not Britney. Bc she's slayyying those #1s with every single
I'm out.. But we all know rihanna >>> Britney
