FIRST OF ALL: This has absolutely nothing to do with freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is protection from the GOVERNMENT.
Second: No one is calling his ability to say these things into question. We're calling what he actually said into question. Of course he's allowed to say these things, just as we're allowed to call him a moron for saying them. It works both ways.
Why can't he just explain his tweet that started this imperfect storm and get it over with? 
Say "I'm not homophobic".
