Not in the traditional sense. But all the hype built around the anticipation of the album and social media buzz is promo itself.

It's just an unconventional form of promo.
Plus, Beyonce has had great media exposure throughout the year.

Yup. People saying the 'release' is promo are way off. It's just a genius idea that generated a lot of promo. Every artist is capable of this and should be thinking of ways to do this with every release.
It proves that you don't need to be on every talk show and have singles, etc.. to sell a lot first week.

When people say promo they're not talking about free promo but the costly stuff like commercial advertising announcing the coming of the album, distributing previews and leaks (yes, some leaks are fake) of songs from the album, paying fortunes to stores & organizing frontloading (preordering) of the album, conducting media campaigns/press activities about the album, hosting parties and other events with props and themes on the album, inviting a boatload of VIPs and wannabes and their relatives, paying for their four course meal and bottle-service and free giftbag full of goodies related to the album... etc etc - basically all that stuff that (certainly when added all up) already costs gazillions of money upfront before even any final product gets into the hands of the first general public buyer.

The element of surprise is her promo, very smart and we all know Beyonce will make an effort to promote her album.

LOL stop. You do know Beyonce's been promoting her arts and talents all year around. She had : Super Bowl, Biggest selling vogue cover of the year , Biggest selling GQ cover of the year, Biggest female tour of the year, Most searched woman on the internet, 50 million dollar deals, 17th Grammy, Hit movie, Record breaking documentary, breaking twitter records, H&M, was @ the met gala, her IG followers, her fan base, calendar + her her 2013 music snippet so ofc if you have all the hype and drop your album out of nowhere it'll do well. I don't know know why people are making it sound like she just come out of hiding.

The delusion is REAL!
I'm sure when people see her on a Pepsi commercial they go "Oh, I need to buy her album because that's what she's trying to promote with this Pepsi commercial" or when they see her at the superbowl and go "Hey, I should buy her next album that hasn't even been announced and not the songs she performed because she's CLEARLY trying to promote her non-existent album!" or the clothing commercial where they promote a song that wasn't even released instead of the actual clothing.
A mess! You're just pressed your ugly flop fave can't sell **** to save her pointless life.

Oh you stop. The levels you need to doengrade yourself to are already proof tha Bey indeed killed no promo excuse. Why? Because with this logic there is no such thing as "no promo"
Releasing an album is album promo (sic!), people talking about you is album promo, album reviews are album promo, commercials of fragrances, clothes, drinks are album promo even if there's no one song from the album in them, even if this all happens half year before album announcment it's still album promo. By this logic we can easily prove Beyhad the LEAST promo out of every pop girl that released an album. And Britney and Rihanna and Adele no promo slayage will turn into "endless promo" lists.

Obviously she's not going to talk about and add her new songs in them because it was part of her plan.
Beyonce been giving her fame status promo all year and she gained HEAPS of fans thru that. She did say she'll put a new album but never when. Hence why she named the album "BEYONCE". I don't like how her stans are acting like she's been hiding in the push all this years and just put out the album out of nowhere.

The surprise release is promo in some kind of way. I mean, it's big news when a major popstar like Bey releases an album out of nowhere. All the media were talking about it in my country yesterday.
I don't think any other popstar could pull this off, though. She's very smart. She definitely knows what she's doing.

Well this sudden release is a huge attention grabber.
But you have to be big enough to get noticed.

Calling the album release promo is a mess. Are we going to count singing the songs in the studio as promo now

No. The surprise IS the promo.
The fact that she released a new album with absolutely NO announcement will make buzz through the internet with dozens of online websites writing an article on it, it will headline a lot of gossip shows the next day and will create buzz over Twitter and Facebook.
It's not the conventional promo, I must say this is the smartest thing ever done for promotion this year.
The "shocking album release" will make headlines.

The album release is not a promo.
Beyonce in 2013: Super Bowl, vogue US cover, Vogue UK, GQ cover, world tour , Most searched woman on the internet, 50 million dollar deals, 17th Grammy, Hit movie, Documentary, broke twitter records, H&M deal, was @ the met gala, gained 30% more IG followers, her fan base, WW played pepsi & H&M commercial with her music snippet, 2014 calendar + her 2013 music snippet etc all those things where leading to this moment - unexpected album release named Beyonce.
Remember when people were asking why she did all those things and didn't put out new music?...well now you know why. Beyonce played a VERY risky promo tactics card and she pulled off because she's talented.

I wouldn't say it had no promo.
It had no TRADITIONAL promo.
But shoving "New Beyoncé album out" in front of every itunes buyer face IS promo and is more effective than most of the traditional promo tactics.
This is not a bad thing because I know ATRL attacks anyone who says that a certain artist is promoting their work as if it's a bad thing.
But the album had promo and a very smart one.
