As a 21 year old, I take offense to that. If I was in Miley's position, and I received a letter like that from Sinead, I would send a polite, cordial response refuting her point by point. I WOULDN'T have taken her struggles with bipolar disorder and thrown them in her face. Nor would I have done such a thing when I was 20, or 19, or 18, or 17... or ANY age, really.
But you know what? Maybe you're right. Maybe it WAS something any other person would do.
Let me explain. Here's a comic that was uploaded to tumblr this morning. It's from 'Depression Comix', a comic that chronicles the trials and tribulations that people with depression (and similar mental illnesses) go through:
The sad thing about this is that it's all too common among people who struggle with depression/ anxiety problems (and I know plenty of people who do; hell,
I do sometimes). Many of them are inclined to hide their problems and pretend that there's nothing wrong instead of seeking out help. It's baffling, right? Why would you refuse help, hide your pain and continue to suffer in silence?
After all, if you need help, all you need to do is ask, right? What's the worst that could happen?

Oh, right. THAT could happen.
The sad truth is that Miley's just the tip of the iceberg. The social stigma surrounding people with mental health issues is still distressingly strong. Now, I'm not saying that the fear of being ostracized is the ONLY reason why depressed/ mentally troubled people hide their problems, but I can't imagine that it helps matters. Do you think they're going to be more willing to reach out to others after they saw what happened to Sinead?
Ultimately, yeah, you were right.
Anyone would have thrown that back in Sinead's face.
Anyone would have used that against her, because in this society, anyone who struggles with mental illness is a weirdo freak who deserves to be shunned and mocked.
It's the sad world we live in.
