It doesn't matter what he used as a means for discipline. What seems momentary, has a long last affect when you're kid. Once the brief whelps are gone, the psychological damage is there and will have a greater affect. These girls can end up being internally scarred for LIFE.

I've seen this happen with a friend and you can become an emotionally unstable person as an adult. It's just not right ethically.
