Kelly obviously. Talent shows change tv and music. Kelly has a ten year career, won Grammys, set records and influenced others. Katy had a few hits and accomplished quite little aside of her record

Katy is a hitmaker who will be forgotten. Kelly will be remembered for her vocals skills. She's already in the echelons with Celine, Mariah and Whitney with just her voice. Kelly her legacy > Katy her momentary spotlight.

Teenage Dream has sold as much if not more than Kelly's entire discography sans Breakaway and it was released in 2010.

The hardcore milking of TD for 2 full years with 5 #1 singles and it only managed to ship 2x platinum. Stronger had one hit and sold over a million copies. With barely any effort, Kelly stays winning.

And btw, why are you bringing Christina? We're talking about singing not screaming.
Since when is Kelly known for her amazing performances through the world? The GP (besides the US one) doesn't even care about her.

Yes sure, selling almost 3x Platinum in the US in 2012 sucks soooooooooooooo hard. Everyone sells 5M copies nowadays, poor Katy. 
No one cares about her album and that is why she can smash with 8 singles from the same album.

I don't want to degrade smash hits or chart toppers but Katy's chart toppers are forgettable to be honest. If that's your basis as legacy then you guys are telling that Katy has a bigger legacy than Etta James and Pat Benatar or even Xtina or even Kelly Clarkson.
Etta has At Last, Xtina has Beautiful,
while Pat Benatar has Hit Me With Your Best Shot while Kelly has Since U Been Gone!
Katy? ahmmm her hits are forgettable, the only one she has is I Kissed A Girl and isnt comparable to the songs I mentioned.
You want proofs?
Rolling Stone, Grammy, Billboard, list goes on and on.

this is so weak and it's getting old 
you cannot compare current "tactics" to those of the 80s/90s because we've no record on what artists and their record labels did with singles and their sales at retail. i am not saying that Michael discounted his singles or had remixes, but don't you think it's a little unfair to say that Katy "cheated" for all of her #1s and it makes it less of an accomplishment than that of Michael's?
and where are these payola receipts? i swear, just because an artist happens to smash the radio with 8 consecutive singles, it "HAS" to be payola involved
