She would need more than just great sales to be considered a "definite" pop star for many years ahead. She will need to leave an imprint in pop culture. Something the media all around the world will always talk about. Shania might have those diamond albums but she never did anything that cemented her as a pop star. Man! What do you think she needs to do to leave an 'imprint' in pop culture? I think success is the biggest and most important thing because success leads people to talk about you and she is easily the artist who most people want to have her album in the U.S. I mean when you sell 1 million+ albums in a week isn't that a major imprint? Its like when that happens everyone says 'oh **** this girl just did that' its not something you can take forgranted. I think Shania left a major imprint as well her success for Come on Over made a country album global so that is a major imprint atleast for me.

She just released her third studio album which had higher first week sales than her previous. Her singles off the album have been modestly successful worldwide. Her tour is doing better than ever. Where is the "clear" loss of public support? And, no the opinions of ATRL posters don't count.

She is marketed as a country pop star, not a full blown one, so she has different objectives than that of a Lady Gaga and Rihanna. You dont really see "amazing music videos" and "iconic performances" in country music, which are really more so controversial than amazing or iconic when it comes to pop. The Madonna stunts and Lada Gaga stunts stem from controversy, which makes them memorable.

The only thing we can really use against Taylor is the fact that she's 'local' and doesn't have 'iconic' music moments. It's hard to say anything else about her. She has a strong fanbase, industry respect, critical acclaim, crossover success, and everything else.

Anyways, I dont know why people think she needs public controversies to be one of the biggest acts of our generation. She doesn't need to be kissing girls, killing herself on stage, strip on stage or dry humping a backup dancer to impact people. Yeah, I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact that it peaked about a month before CMM did and has received virtually no promo in the past 3-4 months (whereas CMM has gotten promo from the Olympics Swimming Team and Glee).

Then, subtract the 400K+ of its sales advantage from the remix and

...and Gotye still comes out on top. He's ahead by 600-700k now, and the sales gap will probably get even wider in a few months when Gotye sweeps the Grammys.

And again... Gotye reached the 6M mark six weeks faster than Carly did. It's an undeniable FACT that his song sold more in less time.

Besides, what's the point of subtracting the remix sales, anyway? The people who bought the Tiesto remix were still paying money for Gotye's song, so why shouldn't they count?

It's like, dude... all the numbers point to "Somebody" being the bigger hit, and it doesn't matter how much you try to discredit its success.

Besides, it's an awesome song and it definitely deserved to get as big as it did.
