Changing the day of the VMAs to Thursday after five years of airing it on Sunday threw many people off and many people didn't even know that the VMAs were last night.

The lack of hype for this year. There was significantly less promotion and hype for this year's awards show and that definitely affected the ratings negatively.

Lastly, the performers list was definitely less interesting than last year. Let's be real, the trinity along with Adele ran the show last year. Everybody knew what was going on and a lot of people tuned in in the middle of the show when Bey showed off her baby bump. This year, nothing really shocking happened so there was no mid-show hype.

Next year they need to bring back the trinity and return it to a Sunday spot, or even Saturday.
