For sales total is used standard calendar year, it is used for Soundscan reports that are compiled and track all album, singles and video sales.
Billboard uses their strange year only for their own charts and rarely tells exact sales for it.
And no one uses release date for sales tracking because it's harder to follow.
There aren't many.
