You're sounding like a real SISSY. If you don't like another person's various beliefs, attitudes or opinions over a risky topic ignore him or her! You sound so bitter when instead you could be focusing that time and energy on other matters that demand your mind and attention.
Everybody needs to stop being so sensitive and politically correct!

Most these posters condoning this punishment are acting on emotion - you've become angered by someone's beliefs that do not match your own.
So here's the thing. Why are posters trying to condone this suspension because ZOMG ITS OFFENSIVE, but have NO PROBLEM bashing religion, making Jesus jokes, etc. I'm offended by all these. Should I ask for you all to be warned/banned?
You can't be selective. Whether or not you agree with the boy's views, this didn't warrant a suspension. It is what he is raised to believe and it's really not anyone's business how the child is raised at home. Wrong? Yes. Illegal? No. Not even the teacher has any business trying to teach the kid that the view is wrong; we can only ask the child to not make those remarks so as not to offend anyone. Can you imagine the trouble we'd get for "shoving our beliefs" on a kid if we tried to teach them OUR beliefs? The parents could easily get that teacher in huge trouble for trying to force her beliefs on the child.
The suspension was reversed, thankfully. Had it been kept, the school could have easily faced a massive lawsuit. And the thing is, the parents would have easily won this case.
I'm sorry if you don't like the child's beliefs, but that isn't a reason to suspend him.

The thing is, if he knew it could've offended somebody very easily, why say it?

One you practice because you think it will get you to the right place afterwards.
Being racist is something that will get you nowhere in life,
unlike religion which one believes will.
However, there is a time and place for everything,
but I don't know whether or not him saying it was relevant to anything at the time.
I didn't bother reading the full article. lol

The point was, both race and sexuality are something about someone, their identity, that cannot be changed. Their religion can be changed at any point.
Saying either of those, race or sexuality, is wrong and offensive.
( This next sentence I'm about to say is not true, just so you know, it's just to prove a point.):
I think being black is wrong because it's my belief.
Was I hostile with that? No.
Was I offensive with that? You decide.

I think the problem is, why is he or anyone discussing religion or religious beliefs in school? I thought that those things weren't allowed in school. While I don't think the kid should be punished, I do think there should be rules against speaking on religion in a public school. That way, we can avoid situations like this one.

Well it depends on how she said it and if she starts with homophobic behavior, I could say that I'm glad she was suspended

THIS.
Freedom of Speech? My Ass. I would rather protect gay students from a bigot person than a bigot person from a (maybe too) harsh punishment.

Obviously it's a stupid thing to say, but someone shouldn't be excluded for it.

You realize he didn't threaten to beat all gays to death with a baseball bat, right? This isn't "protecting" a gay student from anything, except for their own over-sensitivity.

i hate the whole "he was just expressing his opinion" thing.
the opinion and beleif is discriminatory in nature. I don't respect peoples beleifs and opinions about gay being wrong, when it's something that isn't up for debate on whether it's right or wrong in the first place.

It's protecting a gay student from bigots who think he's WRONG.
YOU realize that there are gays killing themselves or living unfulfilled, unhealthy lifes because they think society thinks they are wrong? Just because it doesnt hurt you or most of the gays who are strong enough doesnt mean it should be said.
And don't act like saying being black was wrong is just a "stupid thing" to say. It is unacceptable.

religion...such a wonderful thing! what else makes being judgemental, homophobic, and intolerant seem ok and justified?

Exactly. Why not go all the way and tell the teenagers that using condoms is a sin?
Oh, excuse me: that I BELIEVE that using condoms is a sin.

No, it's not. Any gay child in that class, unless they are complete fools, are well aware millions of people think being gay is wrong. That person still thinks his sexuality is wrong whether he's in the same class or not.

Tragic as any suicide is, I've never heard of someone killing themselves over a classmate calmly expressing his views on homosexuality. Killing themselves over excessive bullying? Yes. Something like this? no.

At the end of the day there are some things you must learn to take in stride. If someone thinks your sexuality is wrong (read: sexuality=/=your entire being) you're not going to convince them otherwise by getting the authorities to shut them up. Challenge their beliefs with your own or ignore it.

It is a stupid thing to say. If someone came up to me and told me being white was wrong, I'd laugh nervously and walk off.

This is exactly what I was talking about a couple of pages ago. Saying Christianity is bad/evil isn't seen as offensive at all. It's still a moderately large part of someones identity.
Even if I was religious, I wouldn't take offence to this, but it's still stupid to generalize.

It doesn't help when someone in your classroom is just saying it out loud... A suspension wasn't necessary, but the point is, it was offensive.
No matter how calm it is, it's offensive to hear that who you are is wrong.
Your sexuality is part of who you are, but whatever with that. It's not going to change how they think, but at least you don't have to hear them talk about it, despite how calm they are.
Perhaps not everyone who takes offense is just super-sensitive. You just appear to be made of emotional titanium.

It's part of who you are obviously, but it shouldn't define you as a person, or at least I think it shouldn't. Alot of people take the opinion of "Hate the sin, Love the sinner". He doesn't necessarily think YOU'RE wrong, he might just see gay people as good people who made a bad choice for all we know.

No, I just realize there are much, much worse people in the world than this boy and it's not worth getting your panties in a bunch about.

I think it was because the child's word was categorized in hate speech, maybe.

Kay, fine. I still am offended, but I don't think he should've been suspended. Whatever.
