The rest - and this is not to be inflammatory! - have hitched their wagons to the worst of producer-driven pop (the two K's come to mind immediately) or, very admittedly/admirably don't need to have contributed anything but their essence to their music. (The two biggest examples of this had a certain R and B duet that topped the charts this year). Who's looking down on them? I'm not. (well, except for Mr. Brown ...)

Kesha writes each and every song on her albums, heck the majority of her unreleased is also penned by her.

Ugh, yes. The reviews that now dominate popular culture can be fun and useful on their own merits, but they fall far short of true artistic criticism. For the most part, they fail to focus on the craft, the context and the the significance of a work as a cultural text. Unfortunately, you hardly see that type of writing outside of an academic setting anymore, because it's seen as elitist and inaccessible.

Man oh man - have you listened to most mainstream pop ALBUMS? They are horrible! When you're not a "pop star," you're not looking to create the perfect radio hits - so you can concentrate on making a cohesive, coherent, cogent body of work.

Most pop albums are three-four great tracks (the singles), two-four cute ones and four-eight pieces of trash. FACT. That is the MAIN reason mainstream albums aren't acclaimed.

Its just your opinion. I and i'm sure many others could name lots of pop albums we enjoy beginning to end.

You will not shade my all time favourite album like that. The lyrics were great outside the singles. Remember When, Darlin and 4 Real lyrics slay. I wouldn't say Bjork is not popular. She's definitely not as popular as our faves but an important part of the general public does know who she is.

And to answer your question, I would say it has to do with the access to their music. People don't know how great they are because their music is not played on the radio.

Anyway to reply to the question, because their music is not accessible and most of the time they don't really make much for their carreers and don't have a big marketting engine behind them.

But I'll say that even though there are not well known by the general public, they are really popular amongst their genre's fans. For example every RnB/soul fan knows Erykah Badu or else he is just not an RnB's fan. It's impossible not to know her, the same goes for Jill Scott.

I've never came across someone who doesn't know Björk in France by the way.
