Anyway to reply to the question, because their music is not accessible and most of the time they don't really make much for their carreers and don't have a big marketting engine behind them.
But I'll say that even though there are not
well known by the general public, they are really popular amongst their genre's fans. For example every RnB/soul fan knows Erykah Badu or else he is just not an RnB's fan. It's impossible not to know her, the same goes for Jill Scott.
I've never came across someone who doesn't know Björk in France by the way.
