Well she debuted that song in June last year (2010) so it would be impossible to know whether it would be a single or not over a year later. Based on its rock n roll sound, she assumed that it wouldn't be a single since all her singles are dance tunes, and that's a pretty safe assumption. It just so happens that the song was produced by Mutt Lange, had Brian May on guitar, and turned out to be a pretty huge song on an album that isn't very mainstream-sounding, so I'm not surprised it's being released now. She was not lying. Oftentimes fans, myself included, will live and die on her every word. She gives hundreds of interviews and makes thousands of statements and hasn't left the public eye in three years---she's bound to make seemingly contradictory statements at some point. But her saying You and I would most likely never be a single was a safe assumption at the time.
