Yes. This or Man Down was the perfect choice.
Just like her label said, ballads sell albums, and Rihanna would get a lot of Hot AC with this song, and a lot of Pop airplay, so I think its perfect.
If Man Down was released, it wouldnt do amazing on Pop or Hot AC, but would smash Urban. So its basically equal.

I'm fine with this but I would've preferred Cheers right after S&M.

Not bad choice, but Fading would be better.

I can't help but think the people who are disappointed with this being released are one of 2 things. Either Rihanna haters, or people who are more concerned with the songs they personally like, as opposed to what will garner the most success.
Man Down would have been an awful choice right now. Loud is on a roll and has steadily been producing hits. MD is not a certified smash; it is very risky and could very easily go either way. Releasing it now could make or break the momentum of the album. In order for the maximum amount of singles to be released, we need to have the guaranteed hits released first. Especially this late into the album (going on a 4th single), an underperforming release could very well cause Def Jam to end the era/move on to a rerelease. Man Down is a late single, one that shouldn't be released until DJ and Rihanna would be happy with finishing the era.
CKB and Cheers were always the safest choices after S&M was released. I am extremely happy with CKB being chosen over Cheers because that keeps the possibility of Fading open to be released, as well since it's highly unlikely they'd release back-to-back ballads.
The single releases have been perfection thus far. OG screamed first single, WMN was an amazing follow-up and S&M has done amazing despite it's racy content. CKB is hands down the next option. To keep it going, the following needs to happen.
4. California King Bed
5. Cheers
6. Man Down
7. Fading (if MD is successful)

Did you just compare the masterpiece that is Fire Bomb to the piece of garbage that is Cheers?
California King Bed is an AMAZING song and a great single choice. I'm excited.

The point is to be risky, and not go with the generic Urban track. Fading is nothing new for Rihanna. People have heard it: Unfaithful, Take A Bow, We Ride...
California King Bed sounds NOTHING like any of her other singles. Neither does Man Down or Cheers, so those three are obviously the three single choices.

"Tonight she gone be SMASHING on the floor"(well said jlo)
This was a great choice, great lyrics and vocals, INSTANT top 10 hit. Plus she hasnt released a ballad in a while.

This is going to flop unless there's heavy promo.
I don't think it will end the Loud juggernaut, mostly because her songs have had excellent radio longevity this year, especially "Only Girl." And if "CKB" bombs I'm sure they'll be quick to put out another uptempo/rihrelease.
