p.s. i threw RedOne under the bus for working with JLo & for producing Hair, not because MTN flopped. i LOVE MTN regardless of it's place in the charts (or lack there of). I have never cared for Akon or the guys who have a career because their Dad/Grandpa was an A&R for Motown.

I don't have a problem with her albums through the Fijacion Oral. I thought that was a great era, especially with her more natural look. But She Wolf was lackluster, and Sale el Sol was the definition of an ass kissing album.

Ass kissing album? How? I really liked Sale el Sol, especially Devoción, Tu Boca and Lo Qué Más.. you mean ass-kissing to the latin community?

It was just very much what you would expect to hear from Shakira, and with the merengue-tinged songs, it was almost as if she was purposely fitting into stereotypes of what music a Latina should release. It seemed to be almost like an apology for taking a risk with "She Wolf." Because "She Wolf" did not meet sales expectations, she went and released the album that Epic Records expected from her. The Spanish follow-up to "She Wolf" was not supposed to sound like this. It was very likely going to continue the electronic dance-pop sound. She went back in the studio and quickly recorded several merengue songs and included 3 on the album.
Considering that Epic Records showed absolutely no support for the album (despite it producing hits and selling well worldwide), it's probably good that she did not invest that much energy into creating very adventurous songs.

Yeah probably, it kinda was made to regain her latin following I guess.
But one thing I did love, and that was the photoshoots! Damn, when I saw the promo shots with her by the water with a headband and tousled hair and a tutu, I was very proud of the direction she was going, the photoshoots were somewhat adventurous! But I can see how the songs weren't.. they also didn't fit at all with the Oral Fixation era in my opinion.
I'm hoping for a direction similar to Whenever, Wherever image wise, like very Native American looking and ethnic with long wavy hair. Not too electronic, a bit ethnic with the andean pipes incorporated into a pop song, but a little dance-electro if she wants to, but as I see it, the people who are really creating an interest from the public are people like Adele, Lana and such who don't use any electronics but instead create the trend, instead of following it like Rihanna and now Madonna with Girl Gone Wild, even though I like it.
What do you guys wish for her album? To be honest, I don't have many requirements, if the album is a huge seller and pulls of 500K first week worldwide, then I'm happy regardless of the sound. Because then that must mean the public will find the sonic material interesting as well as the new image she will be sporting. And then I probably will too, being a long term fan.

She needs to make a very hard hitting dance album with some house influences. Based on how many DJs she has reportedly seen in the last year, an electronic album is very very likely. She needs to regain her U.S. audience, and because of this she might actually have to create music that's specifically designed for U.S. radio and not simply creative music that has a chance at catching on and being played on U.S. radio. "She Wolf" (the song) was off-beat and managed to get somewhat high on the charts, but not high enough for record label standards.
She has been very lucky to have a couple career-saving mega-hits ("Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka"). She's actually ridiculously lucky, because when she does get a hit, they tend to be enormous, topping charts in so many countries.
But with this next album, she needs to ensure that she restores her U.S. presence. It's really the only important market that's lacking. If she gets this, everything else will fall into place.
It's a high risk situation, but hopefully she will get things right. Even more crucial is that she has a strong management and PR team. Her last 2 albums were plagued with poor promotion and timing (delays, scrapping singles, trying to promote 2 singles at once when they can hardly promote 1 single well).
*** Also, I think there is a huge misconception when people say Shakira should do more ethnic songs, as if by nature of being born in Colombia she must necessarily enjoy ethnic sounding music. Shakira's favorite band is Depeche Mode, which is very much an electronic band that heavily uses synths. I don't think she should label herself simply as the girl who purposeful injects ethnic influences into her songs. She has varied tastes in music and should be free to explore whatever genre she likes. She's good at pulling off many different styles.
