David Bowie's album was slated for a March release a couple of months in advance. It wasn't released in January.

Both are impressive for different reasons, with Taylor, everyone knew she'd sell incredibly well, but with Beyoncé it was exciting due to the fact there was a sense of being blindsided and unable to predict the outcome. A lot of people thought she'd flop.

The album was released in March. He had 2 singles out before the release. The album announcement was made in January when the single dropped. People were surprised because it was his first album since 2003. And releasing an album on iTunes radio 8 days before the release is not new. Every week, try do it. If you check this week, they have Calvin Harris album streaming. It was NOT a surprise release.

The point is that Bey's album wasn't the first surprise release when Bowie already did it with his album. Yes, there was an initial announcement but Bowie released it to iTunes days before it was released and that to me is a surprise release.

Since we are talking about iTunes, Taylor did not sell more than Beyoncé. Taylor's sales are 75% physical so she sold around 150k digital copies vs BEYONCÉ's 617k digital copies.
