Particularly with many of the New Testament teachings, such as the two most important commandments

Of course most Christians ignore half the horrible stuff, but isn't that the problem in itself? It's like everyone follows the new testament, but will quickly run to the old testament to vilify something that challenges the religion, despite Jesus' sacrifice serving to forgive and more-or-less abolish the old ways and set the path for a new one.
Why are some commandments followed, not others? Why do some Christians (and I know it's only some, but it's still in the Bible and therefore problematic) use the Leviticus anti-gay lines, but ignore the blended fabric / slavery / misogynistic ones? I don't get it.
