Celeb News: Linda Perry attacks Katy Perry

A lot of you are being ignorant. She's saying that Katy isn't going against the grain or changing things up musically.
P!nk and Christina are both artists that do this regularly, and clearly artists that Linda believes in.
No, "Candyman" isn't a lyrically deep song, but it was fresh and different for the time it was released. That whole album was exploring new territories for 2000s pop music, so clearly Linda was happy to be a part of it.

That kind of surprises me, when albums like Animal, Femme Fatale and Cannibal have received far better reviews than Teenage Dream.

Well, this gurl Linda is obviously mad. She's almost 50 and still scrapping up her savings to build a music career, while Katy has that must career at 26, is tying records originally held solely by legends, and she has it all so effortlessly.

Yeah, it was funny when I thought Katy was just gonna brush it off like she normally would.

Katy Perry may have sold more than most of the girls that are making substance-less music in the industry, but it's really the whole that matters in this problem as opposed to the part, being Katy.
People are clearly attacking her for her ability to sell cheap singles rather than albums, but many other girls in the industry have strived to achieve this, before and after Katy Perry came about.

E.T is incredible. The vocals, the lyrics, and the production are flawless.
Firework is another amazing song, it's become her signature song, and its not even her fluffy Dr.Luke "crap."
California Gurls, Teenage Dream, and Last Friday Night are pop perfection.
Pop wise, Katy is on top the game, of course everyones mad.

Katy can't and will never.

Don't forget Alicia's "Superwoman," and Christina's "Candyman" and "Mercy On Me."

It's not about having or not having substance. It's about being an artist.
That's the separation between artists like Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Gwen Stefani and someone like Katy Perry, Britney Spears or Rihanna. No one is to say one is better than the other, it's all a matter of perspective and what you want from your music.

Back to Basic disc 2 wasnt exploring new territories in pop. It was very trashy cabaret joke with the clear intetion of ripping off Madonna's I'm Breathless record.

She was a little harsh on Katy though, the album isn't ****, but I don't see the meaning in most of her songs besides WAILF, Pearl, and NLTM

And their albums/music are not much better, IMHO.

Exactly. I think the reason Katy's album isn't selling is because her target audience are of the digital age, and they're not interested in albums. Adele's appeal is much broader, hence her album is flying off the shelves. I don't see why being a singles artist is considered a bad thing, especially when they sell so much nowadays.

Also, Katy has more than "one or two songs", she has FIVE major hits, arguably all on radios top 10 biggest songs of the past year chart.

As far as the Katy songs argument goes, "E.T." is by far the best song she's ever been a part of. I've been saying that since the demo leaked over a year ago.

The transition from Firework to Peacock on that album is enough to make me want to stop listening, but if the album didn't feel like such a soul-less and confused mess, it might have fared better critically.
I actually feel like Animal and Teenage Dream are comparable albums; they suffer from a lot of the same problems.
Femme Fatale and Cannibal have a much better progression and are a lot more coherent.

"Femme Fatale" is a far stronger record and it's coherent from start to finish. The only highlights on "Teenage Dream" are the singles, minus the lead one, and "Hummingbird Heartbeat." Have you ever listened to "Peacock," "Pearl," and "Not Like The Movies?"

It's not a matter of snobbery, just personal taste. I love plenty of "mindless" party songs.

People on this forum have a habit of using their opinion as fact. You don't have to like her songs, but surely you can recognise their appeal?
The main problem I have with Katy's songs is that they are too formulaic and not spontaneous/ creative enough. I think she has the capacity for brilliance, but much like her contemporaries she's content to settle for mediocrity. Why be brilliant when OK is more than good enough?
I'm not criticising you for being a snob, that would be hypocritical of me when I have been accused of much the same. Take it as a compliment.
