I think the general American accent (west coast/Californian/midwestern) is the clearest accent in the English language. The southern accent is really endearing, so no I don't hate American accents.

The Bostonian accent though...

NJ has no accent. People that move to the state do, and they're all from Staten Island (NY) and sound like they're in the Italian or Jewish mob.

No. There's different types actually. The northern southern accent sound much more pleasant. The lower you go the worse.

I'm so used to hearing them in music & TV shows or films, media is all I associate them with & don't give it a second thought.

However for some reason, I still feel a little surprised whenever I come across someone IRL with an American accent of any kind - it makes me want to slap them just to make sure they're real.

I don't think I can explain it with "lack of exposure" because the accent is everywhere - so I'm not sure why I react the way I do. Maybe hearing it juxtaposed with the Aussie accent just throws me off?

I agree. California has the most basic/non accent voices. we may have a slight tone that is different but when we speak you can hear every inflection in our voices and even someone who knows the most basic English will understand us.

Yeah. And it's definitely not the Midwest. I lived in Indiana for a year and while I could understand everything, there were some weird things. Esp among the older people. Like yellah instead of yellow and potatuh instead of potato. And everything generally had a teeny southern twinge.
