Servers are well off in Canada. It is seen as really rude to not tip, and they make just under minimum wage, so with tips it is quite a lot. I always tip 15%. Can't afford to tip anything more. Anything less... I don't want the server to think they did a bad job or something so it's always 15%.
I live in the U.S and I tip EVERYONE. Even if the service was bad. I've just grown accustomed to it. The nicer your are, the more your tip. For the most part, in the U.S., waiters and waitresses don't make much.
I work retail and customers have tried to tip me before. We're not allowed to accept tips though. Dammit lol.

My cousin use to be a bartender at a restaurant and she told me that some place actually keep names in the system of people who don't tip like they should.
