Adam's Tips

Basic Song Format
The two very most song formats are Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus and Verse-Prechorus-Chorus-Verse-Prechorus-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus. Each part of the song serves a different purpose to the song. A verse should tell details. A prechorus should be a build-up to the chorus. A chorus should tell the main point. A bridge should be like a verse in the sense that it tells details but don't add much new information. If you follow these rules you should get somewhat of a well-flowing arc to the song.
Although these are the two basic formats, I personally love experimentation in songwriting so once you get a hold on these try dabbling with different formats. Try taking out or adding sections once you are comfortable. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
Rhyming
There are many main types of rhymes, but I don't feel like listing all of them so here's four of them: A perfect rhyme is self-explanatory, a rhyme where the words rhyme perfectly. For instance, cat and bat. A near rhyme is also self-explanatory, a rhyme where is kind of rhymes but don't completely. For instance, can and dam. An identity rhyme is a rhyme where the two words are exactly the same. For instance, win and win. A mind rhyme is a rhyme where the two words are related by concept. For instance, time and clock.
In lyrics it's easiest to put rhymes at the end of the line. For instance...
"My neck, my back
Lick my ***** and my crack"
Notice how when a word rhymes it gains much more emphasis. Be careful with this, you don't want useless words sounding more important than the meat of the lines.
General Tip of the Week
Try not to be too trite. There are some things that sound very "lyric-y" that you might be tempted to use. If you just use a bunch of trite sayings and metaphors it doesn't make your song stand out but rather be forgettable and bland.
That's all this week! Thank you again for signing up, and remember these are tips and not rules. Don't be afraid to disregard this and try your luck experimenting a bit.
