A huge mess. I complained about this in school years ago. Was ignored.

I would assume in a similar way to the rest of the world. Being German doesn't equate to being Nazi.

Some people in here. That there are people who think Germany was the cause for the first WW. There are probably people who think Hitler was born in Germany and there are no Jews in this country.
We live multi-cultural now and we live in peace. We were taught about the first war but mostly of course about the second. We get to visit Holocausts and for years we learn how horrible the regim was, what cruel things happened to the people and no one thinks it was alright or not our fault.
It's annoying how some people want to judge the Germany of today when they don't know anything. We will never forget what happened and we make sure that everyone in school learns this and that this will never happen again. We love peace and democracy and accept ANY kind of people no matter what religion.

OT: thete was a person from the US who asked my friend if we had cars here.

Seriously? This was definitely taught in my history classes. The history curriculum has been changing a lot though so I guess it's improving?

We definitely learned about Indonesia, less detailed about Suriname though but we learned about our own slavery.

Seriously we learned so much about Nazi, Hitler and Germany. You would think it was the only thing that ever happened in history... we were basically taught how evil the Germans were and all they did in the 2 WW.

This! Everyone is accepted, not matter which religion you follow, colour you have, from which country you are, which sexuality you have. One nation, one family
It's very sad that some people (especially on twitter after we won the WC) still think that we're all nazis.

I learned a bit about the VOC and Indonesia, but very little. We weren't taught anything about Suriname.

I've visited some of the historical sites in Germany. They're scary, and the fields of WWII headstones are really haunting.

It is clear now, that WW1 and Versailles influenced Hitler's rise to power. Germans are taught in school how Hitler took the power and how bad he was. WW2 is 100% Germany's fault and we are taught to feel bad for it and that something like this should never ever happen again. Democracy is taught as the best and wisest form of government and that we have to preserve and cherish it.
The Holocaust falls in line with that. I feel very ashamed that this could have happened. All Germans regret that and want to repent for it and do so. We have a clear picture of what happened in WW2 and the consequence is that we learned to love democracy and human rights and nowadays, Germany is the most piece loving and cowardly country in the world. We do not want to lead anyone. We do not want to lead Europe or be an important global player. WW2 made us concentrate and fixate upon inner German politics and the idea of how to unite Europe in order to never have war in Europe again. It is since 1990 that Germany regained some national pride again. But we are very demure in this aspect. We love our neighbouring countries now. We want to have the closest and best relationship with them, especially France and Poland. Germany was the second nation in the world - after the USA - which understood that Europe needs all its countries and that they need to united and give up theii sovereignty. Germany is the first country now to surrend it's national integrity for Europe.

Don't worry if you think Germany has a bad histrory look at British history and the British Empire. All the colonisations the Brits have done all over the world, how many countries/people that have been ruined. Trust me, the Brits take the cake. Almost all the evil things that have happened in the world British people were behind it, dont get me wrong obviously like Germany they have invented good things, technology science and poetry/Shakespeare etc. but their history is the worst in all humanity so don't feel bad or guilty.

Not really. You can't blame one country. Because doing so you open Pandora's box. Let's not forgot what the Spanish, Portugese, French, Dutch and Russians have done when they colonized, enslaved, and committed mass genocide. Nor can we forget what Americans did when they killed and removed the Native Americans. Meaning every country has its faults. We just have to look at it and learn from these horrors and try to never commit them again.

WW1 should have never happened, as Germany did not want it and especially the UK did not want it. It was a last minute decision on part of the british government to actually join the war. If only we had never annexed Alsace and Lorraine from France in 1871. The German/French animosity could have been contained and healed. And we would have had a united Europe by 1950-probably.
I'm so thankful that Germans and French people share so many visions for Europe and truely became friends and brothers over the past 50 years. I love France with all my heart and I love the UK. Those three should work together even closer and create a whole continent of freedom and peace and love. Europe was the first country to conquer the world, to impose the worst and best visions. Let us become the first continent which fully unites in love and peace and lead the world for anoher 2000 years in that respect.

Yes of course many countries have done horrible things, but i still think UK history is the worst. I mean at one point they controlled about 458 million people and comprised more than a quarter of the land area of the whole world. Seriously, who else?

Well, I'm not from Germany. I'm from Switzerland, but our history teacher was german.
We were taught how Hitler made his way to the top, and how all the people that had to do with him, contributed to it.
Then we were taught what the other countries did and why they reacted certain ways in certain situations.
We were always taught, what Hitler did was horrible and no one should think otherwise.
