I completely buy that Justin wanted Britney to be his stepford girlfriend, while he soaked up the spotlight. It wouldn't surprise me if he broke up with her thinking he was going to make it big, be the man, bring home the steak and "put her in her place" in terms of impact. But then Britney wasn't here for him when he wanted her back. You can tell he is upset when she kisses Madonna at the VMA performance.
